Am I crazy for being perfectly content with 60Hz? I heard the new iPhone 12 Pro models will have 120Hz with 4400mAh battery. Imagine still having a 60Hz refresh rate with that kind of battery? I’m getting around 9 hours of screen on time now, but with that larger battery coupled with the A14 chip, I’d probably get like 11 hours of screen on time.

I don’t care one bit for it!! 11 Pro operates buttery smooth as it is.. I prefer a bigger battery w/o a doubt.

I have the 120hz s20+ right now I’m trying out and I can’t tell a big difference tbh.. all hype with a higher refresh rate

I only noticed ProMotion when drawing on the iPad Pro. So for me, its not a big deal.

Nope I don’t care. I dot even notice it on my iPad Pro 11 vs xs max. I hope when you disable the feature batterry life increases.

Most people are not gonna care about a refresh rate. Most people don’t even know what that is lol
Exactly. The same buyers of high en iPhone ais my sister and friends didn’t even know what 3D Touch was lol. they’ve won’t know or care.

Personally I'd rather more battery however....

  • 120hz works properly with both 24fps (120/24 = 5) and 30/60 fps content without hitches (60hz does not and can not work with 24 fps movie content, etc. without FPS sync issues).
  • 60hz is not good enough for AR/VR, insufficient frame rate (which is somewhere above 90hz) makes you sick (so if apple or third parties plan on using the iPhone display for VR/AR stuff, 120hz is required).

The beauty of Apple's implementation (vs Android's way, seemingly) is that Apple seems to implement variable refresh rate, while the ones used by many Android phones seems to be locking only into certain rates (eg. 60 or 120). I would think Apple's way would be more battery friendly, thus it took them a while to bring it to the iPhone while it has been on the iPad Pro for years.

What's in it for customers? I'm sure Apple is going to advertise that the battery life of the iPhone 12 Pro will be the same as the 11 Pro, and Pro Motion will be just automatic like in the iPad Pro. Apple might feel that the battery life of the 11 Pro to be good enough, that anything extra can be used to power features like Pro Motion.

Personally, if I have to choose between higher refresh rate OR better battery life, I would opt for better battery life. However, I believe Apple's implementation will maintain the battery life of the 12 Pro to be the same as the 11 Pro. If you find the 11 Pro battery life to be sufficient, then it's not something to be worried about as Apple's Pro Motion will be automatic anyway. Besides, I'm sure you'll be able to turn it off in accessibility setting.

60hz scrolling blows. It's like looking at a strobe light. Jerky. I really despise it cuz it bugs my eyes. It's not noticeable when typing on a static screen or looking at a static screen, but the moment something scrolls - yuck. I really look forward to a 120hz display.

I'd like to see 120hz in the Pro models if they can match battery life of the iPhone 11 Pro/Pro Max. I don't need improved battery usage passed that. It's pretty much confirmed at this point that they're stuffing bigger battery capacity into the 12, so if that is utilized to compensate for promotion power usage then i'll be happy.

Battery life is more important to me but I would love to see 120hz on an iPhone and I trust Apple to find a good balance.

I really want 120hz and it will arrive if Apple can get the battery on same level as it is now...if they can’t they won’t

however yes battery life is what matters

I don't care about the refresh rate but I think it's likely variable and not stuck at 120 Hz so it should save battery. If so I'm sure they'll have a setting to turn it off. Battery life is priority over display quality but to a point. I need my phone to comfortably last all day. Anything beyond that doesn't matter. If it can do that at the improved refresh rate then I'm happy.

Your post just made me remember... From a YT show I watched over the weekend, Prosser stated that ProMotion was either an ON or OFF feature with the way it is engineered to work. There won't be a way to toggle it on or off in software. Apple is looking at maybe reducing to 90Hz refresh if 120 is too taxing on the battery life, but again, if no success, then ProMotion will be out as a feature even though the hardware would be there.

Thought that was interesting to hear, but Apple still has some time to figure it all out since October is the release month at this point.

They managed to get the Apple Watch display to have a variable refresh rate to save battery life. I thought that was a great idea. I'm not sure if the iPad pro does this at all though. If they can make the iPhone like this it would be awesome. You don't need 120 Hz for a static image so that would be a huge battery waste for much of the time people look at their phones. Also 5G... That's another battery killer coming in 2020....

And 5G is definitely more important than ProMotion on a mobile phone. It is the next standard after all.

5G will know doubt take a hit battery life wise but with a rumoured 4400 battery the battery shouldn’t take much of a hit.

However obviously with pro motion that will bring it down. I’m guessing apple are aiming for same battery life as the current 11 pro and anything else is not acceptable in their eyes

It’d be nice to have but I’d prefer a bigger battery, even though the 11 pro I have has awesome battery life as it is.

If I recall, you also are strongly against amoled. What are you going to do when the 120hz displays are all amoled?

Close some apps. Sounds like you are low on ram. My phone is smooth as silk. I can scroll as fast as I want no problem. It’s like people think they need to game at 144hz because it reduces lag. BS.

Holding out for 240Hz. Anything less looks like an Eadweard Muybridge zoopraxiscope projection to me. 120Hz is probably fine if you’re a caveman who’s been frozen in ice for 50,000 years. Or legally blind. Otherwise, yuck.

You are not crazy. I venture to suggest the world is full of people who are entirely unconcerned about their phone’s screen refresh rate. But just as a shark must keep moving or die the tech companies must keep introducing new features to differentiate their new models, and we go along with it quite happily. We rationalise our purchase urges exactly quite easily; I need a new phone because this old thing only has 60Hz refresh, and/or I really need 5G because 5 is a bigger number than 4. We love the tech, all of us, that’s why we haunt forums like this, and it’s why we’ll carry on splashing the cash.

Both AT&T and T-Mobile already have 5G in my area. I'm hoping that actually makes a difference since I often get just 5 Mbps down, 2 Mbps up on AT&T LTE (or 5GE as they want to call it). T-Mobile LTE is worse.

I don't see how those are mutually exclusive. My 11 Pro Max has phenomenal battery life. I'd be fine if the next refresh didn't dramatically increased battery life again. I don't understand people being content with 60Hz when they haven't used an iPhone with 120Hz. Pro Motion makes a significant difference on the iPad Pro displays. I have a 144Hz display and it makes a big difference in smoothness. You definitely notice the difference and while it's not life changing it would make the iPhone's display even better. I'm not sure why this scenario pits it against battery life. I don't think Apple will lower the battery life for the next phones after they were lauded for the improved battery life of the iPhone 11.
