If it would be your only Mac for the next few years, I'd go portable.

I currently only have the one current Mac, a MacBook Pro, (other being an old LCIII running System 7 and hardly usable). My next purchase however will definitely be an iMac, 24". Most of the time I sit at my desk with the 15" MBP, so the iMac would take over duties on that front, but I occasionally take it into other rooms and away with me for the weekend/week on holiday and would continue to do this.

If I were to make the decision again, I would still choose the MBP. I considered the iMac briefly then went from PowerBook to iBook to PowerBook and eventually hung on until the MBP. Glad I didn't get an iBook or hang out for its replacement MB. Not really regretted it, but now I need to fill that desktop void with something a little more powerful and with a bigger screen. I'd always be looking at portables and thinking about the flexibility I'd be getting from them.

I don't care what I do........I'm never buying a desktop again, or at least not for my main computer.

Once you go lap', you never go back.

I agree. I'm really glad I got a MBP. Sure, it was pricer than an iMac, but it's awesome being able to take my computer with me so easily. Then again, I benefit from that, and some people don't need to do that.

I had a 20" iMac. I decided a MBP would be more sweet.

So I exchanged it for a 15" MBP.

The thing was too hot, and I kinda missed the iMac.

So I returned the MBP.

And got myself a 24" iMac :D

I'm lovin' it.

Maybe I'll get a cheap laptop soon, even a G4 iBook. But the 24" is really great.

take my advice:

had an 12" ibook g4 1.33 for about a year - sold it
bought a 17" intel imac core duo - had 6 months
bought a 13.3" intel white macbook - had 4 months

found myself using one computer more than the other at times and syncing was a waste of time.

sold imac and macbook (ebay almost 100% return)

bought 15" 2.16 macbook pro + 22" lcd, perfect soloution,
also a external harddrive, mouse, and keyboard, speakers.

I have a MBP and I love it, but I prefer to have a desktop. I have the MBP sitting next to me right now and I'm using my PC to type this. :p Maybe because I like looking at a "regular" monitor rather than having to look down to a "small" screen and I'm too lazy to hook my external keyboard, mouse and monitor to the MBP.

The 20" ACD is sitting at "work", I don't mind having that setup.

I'm more productive on my desktop.

With a notebook, it ends up on my desk plugged into the wall anyway, and when it's portable, I usually find myself cuddling with it in bed, which is highly anti-social. :(
