For years I have been under the opinion that shutting down my MAC daily was unnecessary. I have always closed all open applications. Recently, I have had a couple of issues that were solved by rebooting, which has got me wondering about whether I should simply shut down my MAC every evening.

Do you shut down your MAC daily? Why or why not?

I always shut down, and consequently every day I curse the slow (and getting slower?) boot time of MacOS. Just a habit I have to switch things off when not in use.

I shut everything down...computer, printer, router, external hard drives, etc....turn off the power strip, turn off the lights and go to bed, or head out, or do something else. Why on earth would or should I use electricity when I'm nowhere to be found?! Haw!

I usually shut my computer down each night but if for some reason I forget it's not a big deal. I like to refresh the RAM and such periodically and that's a convenient time and way of doing it. Definitely if there is a thunderstorm looming up I shut down my computer, too. Better safe than sorry in that instance!

Yep - I shut my laptop down at night. It boots up quite fast (even for a 6 year old laptop).

I do the same with my phone. Well, everything really. My powerstrip with my router/modem, TV box, AVR etc all get turned off at night.

No real reason, just makes me feel good :)

On topic: No, I leave my machine running for backup, etc., and I generally have a bunch of things running, lots of term sessions, VMs, files open, I like to login and get started with my day in the morning

I shut my Mac down frequently for Boot Camp, but never for the night. If I'm not going to be using it for an extended period of time I'll shut it down.

I have an old White MacBook connected to the TV as a video recorder. It's been on 24/7 for 2 or 3 years now. I have a MBP which only gets shutdown if I'm going to be away from home.

Nope.

Software updates or other events are about the only reboots....for about 80 Macs at work. Probably averages about one reboot about every 30-60 days. Longest I have ever gone is about 9 months on Mac a server.

Are you getting the same issue as me where iOS autocorrects “Mac” to “MAC”?

No, not every day.
It's important to keep your mac in sleep because it updates everything at night.
Traditionally, it repaired permissions too although I'm not sure it needs to do that any more.
But it is important to periodically shut it down and reboot it to clear and reset everything.
So i think that's best practice: keep it on most of the time but shut it down sometimes-probably about once a week or so.
Same for your phone. I encountered a problem with bluetooth connecting to the car recently and the solution turned out to be just rebooting the phone more often.

My Macs, never, unless I go on vacation (then I shutdown everything including router, cable modem, UPS, etc.). I do power off the monitor when not in use though. They do get rebooted on OS updates (or major kernel/LTS updates on my neon mini).

My iPad only gets rebooted on an iOS update.

The one outlier is my iPhone, which is shutdown every night.

Yes I do shut it down every night to calm down. if you don't shut it down it still runs in the background even if is closed so I think is better to shut it down. if it wasn't necessary to shut down wouldn't be this function.

Question:
"Do You Shut Your MAC Down Daily?"

Answer:
Yes. Since I first got a Mac in 1987.

Nothing like "a fresh start" the next day...

Most nights, I Shut Down. I've had 3 Macs over a 20+ year span. I've never had a problem that was traced to the habit of shutting down. Some claim it puts strain on components. Maybe, but not enough to cause an issue over the 7-year life span of my Macs.
