I am trying to figure out if I go from a iPhone 11 to the iPhone 12 Pro Max if I will still need a iPad sense the phone seems to be so big. I guess can always try it first without ever using my older iPad.

Then again some people may have went with a larger iPad instead with a 12.9 inch version.

I have both an iPhone 11 Pro Max and an iPad Pro 12.9". Totally different use cases.

iPhone: social media, email, texting, photography, certain games, music, and health tracking

iPad: TV/movie viewing, reading news/books, playing certain games, FaceTime, and productivity tasks (docs/spreadsheets/photo & video editing)

It might be possible to live without one or the other, but I enjoy not having to make the choice.

I use it everyday. It runs my home theatre. Which I have my PC connected to. So Logitech automation starts it up from my ipad. I also use it with imessage as it's more convenient to type on that than my phone. It supplements my PC basically. Also I use it for occasional browsing or what not if my PC is too occupied to use it for general purpose.

I have an Air 1 in the Kitchen I stream Sling with. An Air 2 in the bathroom, same thing.

2 10.5 Pros, one I occasionally stream Sling for sports while watching News or vice-versa.

An iPad is useful for watching YouTube how to's if working on your car or sitting outside.

March Madness is on this week.

There's no way a phone takes the place of an iPad, nor does an iPad take the place of a big screen TV.

Never understood the link between iPad/big phone. If I’m in a situation where I can’t use my iPad, then I want the biggest screen I can fit in my pocket and carry around. So I see a place for both a big phone/iPad.

I stream videos on both my iPad pro and iPhone 12PM, also use a scaled down version of Photoshop and Lightroom on the iPad when I’m not at my desk or on one of my computers,
but back to the simple answer yes I still use my iPad and large screen iPhone...

Yes. My iPad is the main device I use when I’m home. My phone is the main device I use when I’m out. I play games on my phone while I watch videos on my iPad so it comes in handy.

Imo an iPad and a Pro Max iPhone have quite a difference in screen size, so one definitely is not a substitute of the other.

Of course! A pro Max phone cannot compete with even and iPad Mini screen size. There are also many apps that only run on iPads.
While there are apps for video editing and photo manipulation for the iPhones, the smaller screen size of the phone makes it much less an effective experience. Just because something can be done, doesn’t mean it should be done.

I do - have a 12PM and a 11 iPad Pro.

iPad is used daily for commuting and web browsing at home.

I don't have a "Plus" or "Pro Max," but when I moved from iPhone 4 to iPhone 6 I noticed I carried my iPad less frequently when I left the house - the larger iPhone screen was a sufficient improvement that I could read mail and web pages a bit easier.

But I've always had a physical keyboard for my iPads, because when I want to write, really write, a virtual keyboard (or dictation) and small screen just doesn't cut it for me. So iPad will still travel with me when I leave the house when I know I'm likely to have the urge to write or to edit/display my photos on a big screen, or participate in a video conference/call with several people in the room with me, or...

Back home top preference when I want a big screen goes to my 27" iMac. iPad and iPhone are left in the dust. Still, all three are handy and there are times I'll have all three running with different content/tasks at the same time.

In the end, the more tools we have, the more selective and sophisticated we can be about how we use each of them. My electronics tool case has a wide variety of drivers, pliers, cutters, strippers, and other tools... it's just not a one tool world for me.

As iPads are portable devices, why do you keep one in each room rather than just carry it around? Or is this some Sling-related set up I'm unaware of?

RE: the OP question, yeah they're different uses for me. Phone (8 Plus, so not quite as big as the Max but a big-screen device) is mindless browsing and messaging and usual phone stuff. iPad is probably 90% media consumption either when in bed or when someone else is watching something on the big telly and I want to be in the living room but also have the football on. Wouldn't want to spend any significant time at all watching stuff on my phone even with the larger screen, whereas for some stuff I actively choose to use my iPad (third-gen Air) to watch on rather than the TV.

I hammer my iPad mini for browsing and as my Kindle reader, although I never really got on with my iPad Air, it’s just too big and heavy. In use, an 8” display is perfect for me and side-by-side with a 12 Pro Max the size difference is overwhelming.
