However, this tolerance should go both ways.

Those who prefer to wear a computer on their wrist should keep their disdain for those of us who prefer to wear a standard wrist watch to themselves, rather than announcing it loudly (and repeatedly) when extolling the advantages of the device that they prefer.
100% agree, we have way too much polarization in our lives already...
We are different, and that is a good thing.

I simply said mechanical watches are not "just jewelry". They're still valid tools.

For folks that wear smart watches, mechanicals are indeed „just jewellery“ and not valid tools anymore. For other folks, they still are. Simple as that.

I loathe smart watches (…) the crude utility of a smart watch.

How about you try to keep your own disdain for smart watches to yourself first?

(Also, i don‘t think there has been any disdain towards mechanical watches in this thread at all.)

I agree with @the future on there being no disdain for people that wear traditional watches. I don't think anyone here, including myself, has expressed any strong feelings either way. We can leave it at it just being a misunderstanding.

The reason why I started this thread is that at my work, we had a new employee join recently and he was wore a gold Rolex on his first day along with a suit. He stood out because our office is very informal with people wearing suits only for special meetings with executive leadership. He also stood out because of the gold watch because the majority of the people in the office wear smartwatches, either Apple or Samsung. This got me thinking about my Seiko which has been sitting in a drawer for many years. I couldn't even remember the last time I wore it. It's beautiful but just not practical was my point is all.

I went a little nuts with automatic Swiss watches years ago. But once I started wearing an Apple watch, they ended up with less and less use. I have sold a few, and might sell another one or two. Right now I wear one of them about once or twice a year. Otherwise it's my Ultra 2.

Current lineup, in order of most worn to least. While it is easy to run two Apple Watches, it is kind of hard to really run three. I like this combo for now, though. Series 7 green still going strong at 93% battery capacity, series 9 SS gold is my main sleep watch (it has everything, including sleep apnea and hypertension notifications). AWU1 is the daily driver, still at 100% battery life. Rolex is the flashy, special occasion watch. Tudor is the dress watch for work events when I don't want to be flashy. Also the vacation watch sometimes. I will admit recently I have gone weeks without wearing the traditional watches.

As an aside, really funny how great that Series 7 aluminum green looks, and it was the cheapest of them all. I'm gonna keep that one until it doesn't work anymore.

Heresy! ( said with a smile ).
They typically keep ± 2 seconds per day. If your Rolex is losing 5 seconds per day it should be serviced

Depends on the age of the Rolex, the plus/minus 2 seconds accuracy standard came in 2015, before that it was COSC standard. If its outwith that a simple regulation might be all that's needed.

So, for AW’s you have one for sleep metrics (S9) and then daytime metrics AWU1 , swapping them on wrist / charger. Hmm, I’d never thought of that, it’s a good 24/7/365 solution.

When you travel just take the AWU1?

Yeah, for travel I just like taking the AWU1 given the longer battery life.

It's also not a hard and fast rule - some days, I will wear the S9 (or S7) all day. For example, I slept with the Series 9 last night and wore it to the gym today to track my workout. It's sitting at 56% battery - at some point today, I will take it off and put on another watch (I am wearing a green today, so I may go Series 7!).

Trade in values for the Series watches aren't all that great, so I often find more value in keeping them and just using them. This also preserves the battery capacity of both watches. My Ultra is still at 100% battery capacity.

Do you still wear traditional watches and under what circumstance?

I'm enjoying more of a gap between my daily life and technology, the watch being 'strapped' to the wrist is less obvious to put down and leave behind when wanting to disconnect. I've had one since the original release, this may be my last one.

I wear my Apple Watch less and less. The daily charging drives me nuts. Now I mostly use it for tracking bike rides etc. Instead I swap between 3-4 (mostly mechanical) watches. I do think they look a hell of a lot better than my AW. :)
EDIT. Very nice IWC BTW

I'll probably get some frowns for saying this, but the AW Ultra is a true tool watch. I love my mechanicals esp my Daytona but these $10k+watches are nothing but jewelry. They go up in value, can be passed down, won't end up in a landfill in 5 years. I hardly wear mine anymore as I just rely on too many things the AW does. I wear mine 24/7 and charge it while showering etc. I love the flashlight function etc. I may sell off my collection but keep the Daytona as that's my grail piece even though I can hardly read it. It is beautiful but when I wear it I miss the functionality of the AW Ultra. It's funny but here in SF almost everyone wears an AW you go to LA, Hong Kong and most are wearing Jewelry :)

Rolex watches lose 5 seconds/day but most people don't have a Rolex. A $300 Seiko can lose a few seconds every hour which ends up being up to 30 seconds/day or a few minutes by the end of a work week. I think that's unreasonable. You can still wear a Rolex for social validation / fashion but you can't with a "regular" mechanical watch. So, I think unless you wear it for luxury or fashion, it's not a practical tool anymore relative to a smartwatch.

The only downsides to smartwatches I can think of is battery life and irrelevance within a relatively short time frame.

If your Rolex is losing more than 5 seconds per day, it is advisable to take it to an authorized dealer for servicing.

I got an Apple Watch for hiking, biking and a heart condition that has since completely "healed" after an ablation procedure. I don't wear my other watch enough but enjoy the times I do. It has sentimental value as a gift from my wife on our 25th wedding anniversary. I finally got an automatic winder so it it ready for the times I do wear it.

I’m a big watch fan, so yes, I’m usually wearing a “proper” timepiece along with my AWU3. (Yes, I double-wrist.)

As naked as I feel without a mechanical watch on my left wrist, the same goes for the Apple Watch on my right wrist. One is an expression of my individual style, I suppose, while the other is a practical tool.

Regards,
Adam

I’m wearing 2 watches. Left a mechanical one, right wrist AWU3. I love my mechanical ones (9 pieces) and the smart one for the health features (AW for daily use - Garmin for biking, running, snowboarding and hiking).

Well I mean they can afford to buy just about anything trendy and then decide what to do with it. The first version of the AW wasn't seen as all that great though, was it? So for people who don't have to keep track of their spending I can only imagine that it was given away very quickly or ended up forgotten at the bottom of some drawer.

Speaking of drawers - this is is from a shot of Arnold Schwarzeneggers watch collection:

It's from a video I can't find right now on Youtube where he shows you that he just stores all his wrist watches in the drawer of some cabinet. Just tosses them in there and grabs a fresh one when he feels like wearing something different.
I imagine the Apple watch in this case might be found squeezed between the drawer and the back of the cabinet. ;)

This image reminds me of my old phone drawer!
