I only go to SB in a pinch because I don't really care for their coffee. There are a few local shops I go to though and most of the time I'm working with work being writing software.

The only coffee shop I'd sit in is the one on my campus and thank god it's not Starbucks. I rarely actually hang out in a coffee shop though. I don't like having my computer screen open for the world to see. It makes me paranoid.

Yeah....

I don't think I ever brought my laptop to a Starbucks before. Wouldn't rule it out, but whenever I've gone there, it was usually more of a "grab coffee and go" experience. Last time, it was a brief stop on a return road trip. Before that, I went with my g/f one evening and we intended to hang out there a little while, until we discovered they were closing in about 10 minutes.

I have occasionally brought my laptop to a Panera Bread Company restaurant though. One time, we had power outages all over town, but Panera Bread in the next county over had power. So I spent the good part of the afternoon there, eating lunch, drinking some coffee, and working on updating a couple web sites for clients.

Usually classwork. Sometimes there's too many distractions at the house that I can't get anything done. Sometimes I need a change of scenery to keep cranking away. The free wifi makes it perfect so I can take breaks and goof off on non-class related crap too.

I only go to Starbucks to get coffee and then leave but from what I can tell, if you don't have Apple at Starbucks you a loser and a poser.

err..

bringing MBP to coffee shops (or Starbucks for the matter) doesn't always mean I have to use it.
Unless I got deadliest deadline and wasn't with friends, it stays in my bag.

After all mine is 17" MBP, quite big to be on the table. I look nerdier than guys in big bang theory.

Just wondering too, why do people staring at their mobile devices ALL THE TIME when they have friends with them at coffee shops?!

oh and btw, WTH is solitare/minsweper? :p

So what, if you don't have a Mac and you still bring your computer to Starbucks, you're not a poser? I never understood the people who labelled people with Mac's at Starbucks posers. Why because they just have a computer that just so happens to cost more than a Windows laptop?

My gosh, some the answers to the OP here are so simpleminded. Gimme a break, guys go to SB with their Macbooks to pick up girls? Very shallow response, women go to bars and public places embarrassing themselves looking for guys too.
Did it ever occur to anyone here that people do entrepreneurial work? I do an insurance business and while I don't go to SB at all because the coffee is horrible, I do go to my local cafe (non-starbucks) and bring my MBP and do work there. A lot of my business and contacting of clients is done on the web and being out in the public also helps me to meet new clients. I always meet other entrepreneurs with their Macbooks at my local cafe. I also design brochures and flyers for my business using iWork and I can be a lot more creative when I'm outside the office so going to my local cafe with my MBP beats being stuck between 4 walls at my office.

Don't get so pissed Mel, I liked you in Lethal Weapon 2. But that was in friggin' 1989...what have you done for me lately???

"You know that...coffee shop...reading Bull Shi*?? You know why people do it? To get laid." Sean Connery, Finding Forrester

I do a lot of news reading and research for personal projects at coffee shops. At home and at work, there is always too much other stuff to distract me from these two things. I generally accomplish a lot over the course of a couple hours and a couple cups of coffee.

U guys know if there is a daily WiFi limit at SBUX?

Pretty sure there is no bandwidth limit, and there is for sure no time limit @ 'bucks. Coffee bean has a 2 hour time limit which drove me to starbucks once they started offering free wifi, even though I like coffee beans coffee better.

Wild, you would think they would want you in there ordering stuff...why run people off after 2 hours?

The message saying your time is up tells you that you can get back on in 10 minutes, and that it's a good opportunity to buy a wonderful cup of coffeeee. lol
