What bothers me most about this whole issue is that during the keynote speech Jobs, insisted that they put the antenna on the outside for better reception. I get worse reception on the new iphone then i did my 3g.....in all of the same places. than to give us the smart @$$ answer that we're holding it wrong? and then to give the cover up that after all of these years they were using the wrong formula to show the "reception bars" just :apple: trying to make us all look like idiots....and the fanboys are still standing behind apple like nothing is wrong.....disgusting.........

Of course they did. The bumpers weren't just some strange coincidence.

Yeah! Because having a case available at launch for a phone with a glass front and back isn't nearly as logical. Plus, that explanation would ruin a perfectly good conspiracy theory.

What protection does the bumper provide for the front and back?

Glass sheets crack more easily when hit on the edges which are protected by the bumper. The are not as likely to crack when dropped directly on the front or back onto a flat surface.

the phone wasn't stolen.... the boob LOST it in a bar!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lol...he didn't lose it. He got tired of the signal issues and decided to ditch the freaking phone!!...lol.....my name is Amin and I have reception issues....but I won't give it up. Not a apple fanboy...I still have and use my blackberry 9000...btw I say YES!...apple def knew about the reception issues beforehand.

Is it worse if they did or didn't know?

Absolutely. If it can be found or proven in a court of law that they knew ahead of time and that they created the bumper to fix the issue they will be in a world of hurt for knowingly releasing a defective product and profiting from it (bumper).

You're assuming the product will be seen as defective. Given that all cellphones experience some attenuation, you'd need an independent body to determine an unreasonable amount of attenuation so as to prove negligence. However, most companies don't get taken to court over a poor design because it's only that, a poor design. You have to prove ill intent. And with a company that makes more money than you can imagine, a $30 bumper as part of their master plan is a hard sell, especially given they set a precedent of offering their own cases with the iPad.
