I hope Apple will be open minded and embrace USB4 alongside the switch to the USB-C connector.

But given that Apple historically doesn't like being told what to do, I am wondering if they'll stay with USB 2.0 just to stick it to the EU.

They will stick to USB. Apple don’t want us to transfer large videos over USB3 but instead rely on iCloud.

I wouldn't be surprised if they do something similar as they've done with the iPads.

iPhone 15: USB 2.0 (same as iPad 10th gen)
iPhone 15 Pro: USB 3.x, but only include a USB 2.0 cable (same as iPad Air)

The iPad Pros have USB 4, but I don't think that will be coming to the iPhone any time soon...at least not until iOS/iPhones support multitasking and multiple displays. Apple isn't going to use more expensive components for a tiny group of people that would actually make use of it.

I rely on Dropbox for large files, not iCloud.

I could see Apple do the following:

The iPhone pro models get usb 4 speeds due to ProRaw taking up more space. This is the use case that would really benefit from a faster transfer speed.

The base iphone models get slower usb speeds because photo content on those devices presumably take up less space and therefore faster to transfer. Whether that is 3 or 2 speeds, we will have to see.

Most likely yes. EU regulations are forcing them to make the move to USB-C in Europe, and I doubt Apple will make two seperate versions for America and Europe. Though, they did remove the SIM tray in the US, but kept it in overseas markets.

Many posters claim they never use a cable yet take loads of photos and 4k videos...

Very true. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if Apple market the crap out of USB-C coming to the Iphone ("it's an Apple exclusive, and we think you're gonna love it")...but only allow USB 2.0 transfer speeds and 30w charging. In essence, it'll be equivalent to lightning spec wise...just using a different connector.

Apple will do what's best.... for Apple...and Apple only.

I think on the Pro phones this year we'll get at least 10Gbps transfer speeds, if not more.

On the regular 15 and Plus I do think it will USB 2.0 Speeds. Perhaps next year when the A17 comes to the regular phones they will get the faster USB C ports.

Yep, and as much as people don’t want to believe it, they are far from the only one.

The truth is that the majority of customers who will be picking up these phones will never, ever know the kind of speeds the USB port on them are capable of. It is not something that most people think about.
Most people plug their phone into charge, and just… Hope that it charges.
And before anyone says anything, no, I do not agree with this possible decision.
I think all should have 3.1 at the minimum, but I also know that I’m one of the very few who cares.

Nobody connects an external monitor or storage to iPhone either, so again, no need for 20 Gbps.

For example (just making up numbers), if we assume a USB 3 port costs just 5 cents more pe iPhone than an USB 2 port, if Apple sells 225 million iPhones like it did last year, using USB 2 is $11,250,000 extra profit vs using USB 3. Not a lot for Apple, but every number counts for a corporation.

It's probably not just the port, they'd also have to redesign the interconnect for the A16 SoC.
