One way to definitely bend the 15" case, is grabbing it one-handed, lid open, by the ethernet port, with your thumb on the speaker grille, or right over any of the ports. The aluminum over there is quite thin. Or, grabbing it by the DVD tray. Just don't pick it up like that over the speaker grilles.

The 13" I don't see much of an issue since it's lighter.

You had him hook line and sinker.... and then let him go. :D

hehe i was caught, but you definitely couldn't have gone any further... i was skeptical as is, just not sure and not caring enough to verify in my manual.

I'm always wary picking it up one handed because it feels like my fingers are pressing in on it, and that it might do some damage. Because of this I tend to always use two hands to grab each edge. What does macrumors think?

BTW, 15" unibody.

I only carry mine one-handed when it's in the sleeve (neoprene). I'm too afraid to drop it, not denting it, although if you have an iron grip, you might be able to warp the metal a bit (it's aluminum, after all).:)

The Eleventh Commandment: Thou shalt not pick up a solid unibody of aluminum with one hand. By doing so, thou voids thy warranty.

I got a refurb Air once that had obviously been used by somebody picking it up with one hand. There was a very noticeable dent where the thumb fit in, when I closed the lid it looked like the Air was smiling it was such a bend. I sent it back.

To answer the original question: I don't think it's bad at all to carry a MBP with one hand, but I don't approve of picking it up open with one hand. I cringe when I see it. But, that's just me.

Seconded. If you've got sweaty hands, wipe the sweat off before handling or use two hands and whatever you do, don't drop it. :D

Or, as I do, always have a pair of latex-gloves close by. I never let my skin get in direct contact with the mac...

I can see the OP starting a new thread shortly - his MBP fell on the floor and is dented.

I never carry the MBP in one hand, or even lift it with one hand. I saw a thread over on apple discussions where a guy lifted his 15" MBP with one hand and bent the case. He specifically lifted it up right near the ethernet ports. Maybe it was a fluke but I now make sure I lift it up and don't put undo pressure on any one point on the MBP.

A few days ago, I would laugh at the nice jokes here, but my MBP2023 16" screen broke when I picked the closed laptop with one hand by its corner from a shelf. Nothing special, just picked it slowly and accurately, heard a faint click, opened, and noticed a little crack in the corner of the screen with flashing stripes spreading out.

I've been using different MacBooks for nearly two decades now and would not even mind that. But it looks like the progress Apple made in lightness and shape didn't account for some mechanics, and the modern squared form does not give enough stiffness at the corners.

I always carried my heavy 2017 15" MBP one-handed, opened and closed. The TB3 ports on one side are deformed and nothing fits in anymore.
The Display flex-cable broke what normally only was a problem of the 13".
It also looks like one of the battery components got too much pressure on it, it has a burned spot on top and the battery doesn't really work anymore.

I don't know if it has anything to do with how I carried it, but it could.

Well, deform in eight years is not the same as crack in two. Also, I've noticed that on my wife's MBP2021-16" the lid deformed a bit and does not close tightly. So it looks there are constructive peculiarities we should be aware regardless of our previous experience with Apple products.

My deformation and damages took about 1 year. Where I lived until summer 2021 it was used stationary and never carried around. Then from 2021 to 2022 I carried it everyday between several places in my apartment and since summer 2022 it's unusable. I then used my 17" 2011 again until early 2023 when the GPU got the famous damage.

I wouldn't do it, you risk having the frame bend and eventually it will snap into 2 pieces. Even more so if it has rust.
