But even if it's just a spec bump, and an extra GB of RAM is a significant spec bump, the 2017 X can't be called "the greatest" once it's been replaced by a higher-spec'd model.

I don't disagree. It's been that way for 10 years, every time there's a new "S" introduced it's better than the non-S it replaced but only marginally. It's not a new model, it's just a tweaked iteration.

But importantly, there's a difference between the fake news about "iPhone X is a colossal dud and is being discontinued faster than any iPhone in Apple's history!" and what's really going on- just another ho-hum "S" version. Nothing to even discuss, really. It's completely expected. It's a non-event.

I basically agree. There was a post here today about the possibility of discontinuing all current phones due to hardware-based security concerns. I have no idea whether that's economically practical for Apple or any other hardware manufacturer, but it was an interesting possibility that related to the rumor that the X would be disco'd for 2018.

Agreed. I don't see the iPhone X ever becoming a collectors item.

Generally mass-produced electronic items into the millions is not something that will hold or gain value. Unless it's the first iteration of something, a rarity or limited production.
