It's more appropriate to own a MacBook for every room in your house, including washrooms. I would suggest that instead OP.

My setup:

2019 MacBook Pro base model running
30 real time data intensive charts, around 50 live real time data feeds, as well as 7 live video feeds all at the same time 10-14 hours a day. I need this setup to be portable

AND

12” MacBook 2017 model when I have my MacBook Pro docked to the side. I use this for everything else such as replying to emails, etc

Is it appropriate to own both given my usage?

Interesting setup.

I have a 2014 MacBook Pro 15 running Think or Swim showing 64 RT charts. I usually have Fidelity Active Trader Pro running as well and several other things and this is with a Dell 27 inch 4K monitor. I also have a 2015 MacBook Pro 15 running my development stuff which is on a hosted Linux development server. Both run fine though the 2014 can use up a lot of memory.

I also have a 2015 MacBook Pro 13 that's work issued that's mostly unused - I prefer my own.

Whatever works.

I heard the ideal portable solution is to carry as many machines as you can within a portable wheel driven suitcase.

The issue isn't how man machines you have but its actually the bag you have.

Let me explain, the bag you have dictates how many machines you can carry with you.

Therefore picking the ideal bag will dictate how many programs and machines you can run at any given time.

As @556fmjoe says, run one program per machine. So if you find the right bag / case to carry one machine per program you are set. No more slowdown or risk of your MacBook Pro running too hot.

Trying too hard man lol
-------

I ordered a 2nd MacBook for a family member but they sent the wrong one. I ordered a 2016 but they sent a 2015.

The keyboard also feels very different, more mushy like my 2019 15" base model.

I think it must be a replaced one and not OEM.

Whatever the case, today I'm not even using my 15"

Been feeling under the weather today, so just been doing menial tasks on my 12"

Love this machine.

I've taken the link to this thread and added it to the Wikipedia article for "humble brag". ;)

If portability is a requirement, then there are some solid battery powered monitors that could be used as a 2nd display. Not only are they cheaper than a 2nd laptop, but will take up less space.

Says the guy who posts pointless threads on a daily basis.

Can we see the "30 real time data intensive charts, around 50 live real time data feeds, as well as 7 live video feeds" you have? Facebook and twitter don't count.

I did not know this. Can you provide a link? I assumed that if you wanted an external monitor you're pretty much stuck with something big and bulky.

The 30 RT charts stuff is pretty easy. Think or Swim, the free pro trading platform from Ameritrade can do it but it uses moderate CPU and RAM. I don't know about the other stuff - I don't need it for my trading.
