Nokia are really pushing their cheap Lumia 520 and 620's right now and those are selling reasonably well and are far better than cheap Android phones. I don't think they're going to become the new Apple in the smartphone market but I reckon they'll stick around even if it's just to serve the low end market.

By whose standard? I use Windows 7 every day at work and it is no better than Windows XP. I have to restart my computer at least once a day because some program or another locks up.

If Microsoft were to go away, another, better competitor would step in to fill the void left.

As far as the "reasons" or "opinions" you've posted, you may be in for quite a surprise. Microsoft has made plenty of mistakes, I'm not sure I can give an example of a Fortune 500 company that hasn't.

But make no mistake, Microsoft is still churning out plenty of operating profit to keep going for a very long time. That buys them plenty of latitude to "get it" when it comes to mobile, or fold up shop in that sector.

There's a lot that is wrong with Microsoft at the moment, but conversely there's still plenty that's right. The foothold they have in the enterprise, a sector that many here have no appreciation of, is the golden goose that keeps MS in eggs. 🙂

Why would Microsoft innovate when they have 2 cash cows in Windows and Offices? They killed courier (what an awesome concept that is), botched most of major product launches in the last decade (Zune, Vista, Windows 8, Windows RT, WP7, WP8, XBox One), wiped out in the mobile market, in the music/movies/media market, lost 40% market share in IE, bleeding money in Bing and yet they still make record profits.

But then again, MS is sliding toward irrelevance. There is way too much politics in the MS senior management. They have really cool, amazing stuff in the R&D pipelines. It's too bad their internal politics will kill most of them.

IMO the biggest problem with Microsoft is they just aren't cool.

Apple has a cool brand, Google has a cool brand, Samsung kinda sorta has a cool brand, but Microsoft, Windows, and Nokia are the furthest things from cool brands in the entire tech industry.

In an industry which is all about trends, brand identity is the most important thing of all. And Microsoft is screwed on that front. Microsoft could have the best smartphone and search engine in the world but, seriously, even if it was good, who would choose to use Bing?

They've tried their hardest to fix this by plastering advertising everywhere but their marketing team is absolutely awful. It's doing them no favours whatsoever. If anything I think Microsoft's marketing is driving them deeper and deeper into the abyss.

I do still think their phones are highly competitive in the budget market, and people will buy them because they're great value, but they will never be cool and therefore they will never be largely successful.

IMO it's all advertising - Microsoft is terrible at it, I can't remember the last time I saw a msft product commercial that wasn't terrible. Personally it's hard to sign a two year on an unfinished product, even though the lumias look awesome, maybe I'll try the $130 Walmart lumia?

Exactly, their marketing is completely terrible.

I recommend trying a cheap Lumia, either the 520 or 620. They're both very good phones for the money, far better than Androids in the same price range.

"Hate" is an extreme term. It simply means you cannot be objective and refuse to put down your "Resentment" goggles.

Whatever anyone says, Windows is a fantastic product enabling me to play all the High End games and run diverse range of productive software which isn't there on any other OS. Also, as mentioned by previous posts, Lumia lower range devices are selling well confirming that Windows mobile is here to stay. With time, they will fix whatever bugs they encountered with intial Windows 8 launch.

Today is the last one for now with getting a free keyboard with the Surface RT. I have looked into some laptops with Win 8 and have not pulled the trigger.

The Surface is callng out to me. Question is whether I will answer back.

As far as Microsoft having a chance, that does not concern me as it didn't with HTC when I bought the One.

Don't waste your money on a RT device, the entire RT ecosystem is an atrocity which will be dead by next year.

Yeah.. The whole point of RT was to make Windows more competitive against the iPad and Android tablets. Between it's failure to win market share, the negative side effect of confusing consumers, and the fact that x86 processors are becoming more competitive with their ARM counterparts, it seems almost inevitable that Microsoft will abandon the RT platform.

Well I bought it when it came out but I returned it because of the price. It would be better today because of the keyboard thrown in but I did not pull the trigger regardless. I will wait it out for more Win 8 tablets and hopefully soon with a smaller size and better resolution.

$100 more and you can pick up a very nice Atom tablet, giving you FULL windows on a tablet. I don't think we will see anything that competes with the Atom tablets until the holidays. Haswell laptops are only trickling out, and I don't believe there is a single Haswell tablet out yet. I'd be curious if the Haswell tablets are any thinner/lighter than the current ivy bridge ones, I bet they are about the same thickness/weight as the current ones and that is a negative IMO. Baytrail, the successor to the current Atom CPU, from what I've read won't be out until the holiday season, or even later into 2014. All of this IMO makes an atom tablet a pretty safe bet to buy, especially because they have dropped down in price are quite cheap, sometimes even almost half of an ipads price.
