Hmm.... last time i checked, Apple was in business for PROFIT and not for being generous... so I'm guessing No.

Although it would be cool to be free.

Really I wouldn't peg Microsoft as being generous for giving out free SP updates.

I know I know you get sooooooooo (lots of oh's) much more for your money ;)

i'd say NO, its just like those who bought a MBP in 2007 and then leopard came out in Jan 08 its probably going to be the samething, you gotta buy it! >_<

The company that makes iPod owners pay for software updates?

I highly doubt they'd give the OS away for free as I don't remember them ever doing so before.

I recall 10.1 being free to 10.0 users, or at least dirt cheap.

Do I think 10.6 will be free? No, but it'd be nice. It might be cheaper, though.

Not that it matters much, but Leopard came out in October of '07.

Another "no," vote here.

A slightly different take and following the iPod model.

If, as has been suggested, the upgrade is purely performance related and does not include new functionality, then I think there's a small chance it will be free to Leopard users.

If it includes new functionality (of any sort) then it will be a typical paid upgrade.

In a word no.
The long answer here from roughly drafted.
The long thread answer here

It will be included in new Macs sold after its release. For anyone with Leopard on an existing Mac, there will be a price to upgrade.
And with the catch that it'll give a performance boost in some ways to recent Macs prior to say WWDC release versions, it should be getting some decent portion of the Mac community upgrading. Especially if there are compelling reasons, which it seems there are...

That's not how these things happened in the past, sorry...

I could be wrong, but 10.1 was a free upgrade for those who had bought 10.0 That was because it was all about big fixes and not features.

IDK if that will happen with Snow Leopard. Besides, Leopard only cost like $130. It's not like buying a copy of Vista - no bank breaking.

i just got my pro
how much would snow leapoard cost? and whens it looking to come out?

$129 retail
$199 family
$79-$99 student

Possibly as soon as January, but I have a feeling it will be June or October next year.

And it will not be free for anyone unless they buy a new computer within 14 days of its release.

Snow leopard is not coming out for a long, long time. So no, you will have to pay for it like everyone else or buy a new machine then to get it pre-loaded.

I didn't pirate leopard. For $130, it's a good deal, and I have no problem supporting Apple's R&D.
