I think that if Apple wants to remain relevant, Tim and team shouldn't be religiously fixed on what Steve Jobs said years ago. Markets and mindsets change and Steve Jobs himself isn't around to change his mind anymore.

I thnk Apple is missing a potential market niche by not offering an "art kit" of various active pens in different tip sizes and shapes, from round to wedge tip to brushes. Plus adding some really great active digitizers to the iPads to work with those.

I could see Apple offering 5-6 active pens/brushes in a grey roll out canvas bag. Similar to this:

With the Apple logo embossed on it and a price tag around $50-$70.

Apple can always use the excuse that this art kit is for artists and not everyone. Staying strong to fingers for every day use stance. But for the art kit, they can bring up things like Steve Jobs sitting in on a calligraphy class to the idea that Apple has always been strong with artists.

In real life though people will use these active pens for more than just art but Apple never has to admit it.

Soon finger input alone won't be enough, stylus is coming and there are apple patents for it. Samsung have done a great job in differentiating galaxy S and note series using a stylus.

I'd expect the ipad pro and a future 5.5 iPhone to have a stylus but not the next 5.5 iPhone. Though there may not be a 5.5 yet. If not, after 8 years I'll be jumping ship to a note 4 or something for a big screen.
