It depend on what you use it for. If you only carry it in a light laptop bag, it is not that bad. I carry it daily. However, if you carry it with other stuff and your bag is a more protective one (usually heavier), then it is heavy.

Moving from an old dell 15" that weighed at least double... and being used to triple 17" monitors on the desktop there was no question in my mind on which to get but personal preference.... also it is carried across my back in a laptop compartment backpack so bigger digs into the back less.

I used to love 17" desktop replacements. Now a days, I favor decked out 13" + external monitors. That way I don't have to give up on the mobility factor.

I'm not sure I really understand questions like this. Too big for what? To exist? I mean, XXL clothes are too big for me, but clearly there's a market for them out there.

Well I guess it's a bit too big, but I'll adapt to it. The real question is if it is worth the additional $$$$.
Dude, you really have to stop asking "subjective" questions about this.

"Worth" and value is relative to the buyer's abilities and needs. (And pocket).

If you fly then it may be a little too big. Otherwise, I wouldnt buy anything but the 15" personally. What you want is your decision. They are not that big of a difference in size when you stack the 15 and 17 on each other.

Do you think that it has too many unnecessary spaces that is unimportant and isn't used at all?
Do you feel that it doesn't deserve to be called "portable"?
Do you think that it's hard to use because of the screen size?

I'm going to do a lot of web browsing, a bit of gaming and a bit of video editing, too.

I replaced my whole desktop with it. I love it. Will never go back. I go to college so it doesn't bother me to carry it in my backpack. But the screen is well worth it. I watch movies, write research papers and browse the internet with our squinting my eyes.

Being a pro video Dj I have taken full use of the massive screen.
Its wonderful to work with and if you need a laptop for its size abilities apple provide the full range don't they!

Never a fan of that large form factor. The big screen never offset the the downside of having to lug around such a large form factor. And the keyboard always looked out of place to me, with all that extra room why not add a keypad. Honestly it is the only "Mac" that I never considered purchasing at one time or another. I'm not saying that it isn't a useful machine and I don't want it discontinued, but I'm just not interested in one myself.

The subject of the topic should say "Do you think the MacBook Pro 17" is too big for some?"

The answer to that would be of course, that's why the 13" and 15" Pros exist. But there are many people that would very much prefer a 17" as their main machine.
I'm going to school for video game design in San Francisco, and I would like the most screen real estate as I can possible have, while still being able to pack it and take it places, which is why I'll be purchasing one when they are refreshed.

When Steve Jobs introduced the 17" PowerBook, he said Apple wanted to convince more people to switch from a desktop to a notebook. As there are rumors about the Mac Pro being axed, maybe they have a similar plan internally to what he said. And mobile chips are maturing faster and faster; isn't Haswell supposed to have 6-core mobile variants?

I highly doubt Apple will really discontinue the 17", if anything, they'll make it more competitive. There is a real need out there for some people, like myself, that would find the 15" too much of a compromise. Wasn't the analyst who predicted this the same one that predicted the death of the Mac Mini a year ago? They updated it instead. :p

I would have brought the 17" a couple of weeks ago instead of this 15 if it was not that much £££ tbh.

If I had that much when I got this then I would have defo brought it :)

Don't you know, size DOES matter :D

It's the same size as a 13.

Just un plug it.

Fold the lid, pick it up and hold it at your side like a notebook and carry it to where you need to go in your house. Or put it in a carrying case if you leave the house.

I promise you you'll be fine.

I promise...

(what's that you say? You don't have an extra 2500$ lying around?

Ah,,, I understand now....)

:(

I had early 2011 17 mac pro but i sold it because in my perspective it was really big. And i have Thunderbolt 27 so i was thinking why i even bother to have desktop replacement when i got 27" monitor. When i need mobility i have 15".And when i want to work on desktop i just connect it to monitor. Beside that spec are the same. But as u know there is people who found 17" is pretty mobile because they are bodybilder and like 1920 resolution on 17" screen.

I just went to the Apple Store and I never actually paid much attention to this before, but when I did, my reaction was like OH MY GOD! THIS THING IS A BEAST!!! It's so beautiful! Majestic! This is DEFINITELY the one I'm getting! It's perfect! :p

No

Having said that, it's a nice size to do all those things.

If they were to release a quad-core 13" even without a GPU i'd agree with you 100%

but for my I find it hard to go for a 13" because for a little more money I could get a hell more oomph.
