I just ran Jazz Disk Lite on my 512GB M1 12.9 -

Sequential
Read: 3261.15 MB/s
Write: 1155.75 MB/s

Random (4K)
Read: 52.24 MB/s
Write: 39.83 MB/s

In the old days the 512 GB was often similar to the 1 TB, but with these devices and this test, there seems to be a lot of variability. The 256 GB is the only one that is consistently slower (albeit still at a very decent speed).

I got 3282.05 MB/s Read and 2860.34 MB/s Write on 512 GB M4.

My M1 256 has a significantly faster SSD in the Jazz benchmark than my current M4 256, however there is literally no practical difference during work. Even copying files from an external SSD feels the same.

I guess it doesn’t really matter.

It matters for sure in more intensive apps that constantly stream data to/from SSD

Maybe if you were editing video. That’s not something one is likely to do on just 256GB storage though.

For the most part, it’s the random 4K that has bigger performance impact.

I didn’t buy my base model 11” M4 iPad Pro for music or video production, so I’m all good. Just gonna leave the Jazz Disk Lite speed test results for this model here for others:

Six months later, I’m also using an M4 13” model with 512GB storage (for editing short video clips).
