I looked for a case that had extended edges, for the sake of drop protection. Ended up getting the pricey Logitech BT-Kbd case because of that. Rarely use the keyboard (which recharges via USB), but the iPad lies on top of it nicely when not in use. Doubles the weight, but I can deal, jumped up from an iPad 1.

I am thinking if I should go naked with my gold iPad Air 2?

I use the Smart Case. I would love to just have a screen protector and keep it naked, but I take my iPad with me almost everywhere and I know it would get scratched.

Apple leather Smart Case. I was really surprised at how light it is compared to the behemoth Targus 360 on my 3rd gen. Plus it has a cushioned and slightly raised edge around the screen side in case it falls on its face.

I'm using a smoke color TPU case the back paired with an official Smart Cover and an invisible shield glass screen protector. I've kept the thin form factor and it looks quite presentable. I'm also coming from a 4th gen that I always had an otterbox..

I bought mine for me to enjoy, not who buys it from me when I'm done with it. My prior iPads held up very well without any protection, just a little care on my part.

I'm very happy that iPads aren't as fragile and weak as my rather flimsy iPhone 6 Plus.

I really like how my phone functions but dislike its lack of durability. Especially since this is the only iPhone since the original that's fragile. Ive owned every iPhone made and enjoyed their strength and durability.

They've all looked like new after one year. My iPhone 6 is a very expensive surprise. But they can't all be good. Apple's bound to make mistakes, they all do.

Even my prior iPhones were very strong and built to last. Oh well it's live and learn. You win some, you lose some.

I have the Boxwave clear smart cover compatible back shell. It is a clear clear case so the color of your gold will shine through it, it adds a nice sparkle even to a silver Air. Though it is somewhat exposed on both ends top and bottom more than necessary.

Go check the Amazon reviews, as the pictures are not accurate. There's a movie file posted by someone that gives you a better picture of the coverage, though they didn't remove the shrink wrap on it and install it (think they weren't happy with the coverage and wanted to return it).

My Air 2 is naked with no smart cover either, both indoor and outdoor. I encapsulate it in a Cote&ciel sleeve when taking it out, and place it at home on my desk with some unused flat, round desk leg pads under it for the ease of picking it up. In this way, dirts are less likely to get stuck on the anodized surface and discolor it (if and only if you forget to clean it regularly...) too. The bottom of my rMBP suffered from this and caused me to stick a viryl sticker on it, but the good thing is that I no longer need to worry about desks other than mine. Eww.

Though after all I would say it really depends on how rough (...?) you gonna handle these devices.

I'm using an iCarbons carbon fiber skin on my white Air 2. Here it is with my keyboard attached and also in a matching skin.

I use a full case on mine. For what I have in this thing I simply can't feel good not having it in one.

I use my iPad to teach/preach from. So I have to have a thin case or skin on the back of mine. Not so much for protection but because the naked iPad is to slick for my personal usage. I don't like the thought of it sliding off the podium when I step away speaking. I travel full time and really have no control of the style of podium I use.

Want to show with your own pictures? I find the pics on Boxwave and on Amazon is not clear. They show examples of an iPad with a mute button which doesn't iPad Air 2 has. Are they a cutcut for the microphone that is there on the side of the camera? It does not appear to protect the edge by edge with the speakers or headphone jack. What do you think about this case now? I want a case like this that protect the back and I can use Smart Cover if I want it.

smart case minus smart cover part

I bought for my Air 2 smart case and cut the smart cover part and it is ... GREAT! I can post a photo If you like. The problem with all these covers and cases is that they are putting another weight or they are awful (crystal cases). Somebody did this on his Air 1 on brown smart case. I know that it is not cheap but it's great.

Nothing on the back of my iPad Air 2 and only a smart cover on the front. I don't want anything to add weight to this puppy and I want to use it exactly the way it was designed to be used.

Hope this helps... the top and bottom are mostly exposed as the cutout is way bigger than it needs to be. There's a lip on the top so if you place it face down, the screen itself is protected. The Smart Cover should sit/close within the lip.

Thank you so much! I think it's the best option if you want case for the back. How much slim is the iPad now with that case? No worries to dirt easy comes in between? I don't understand that with the lip :S

It does add some thickness but it doesn't feel much different to me. I guess dust could always get in the back with any of these cases, but it hasn't been an issue for me. The lip basically means that the top of the case protrudes a bit from the level of the screen, so there's basically a small gap when you place it face/screen down on a table, only the case sides touches the table, not the screen of the iPad itself. Generally thought of as a good thing unless you want super slim.

I always have mine in a case that covers front and back. Got a Fintie smart shell case for $15 on Amazon that I really like. Was thinking it would be a temp one, but now I'm really liking it. It added very little weight overall, and I just feel more comfortable laying it down than when the back is bare.

I received my case yesterday and it was fit for Air 2. However, I wonder one thing if it's the same for you. On the back on the right side, then on the side to put the smart cover. Along there at logan, it feels the edge not as smooth as the rest of the edge. I hope you understand what I mean. For you/anyone else who reads this to understand easier so lent your image to highlight areas that I'm talking about.

Exactly, that is why I was interested in the case.

Originally I wanted ZAGG Original on the back of my Air 2 like I had done for my past 3 iPads so I could use the Smart Cover. Well, I get to the ZAGG booth to find out they discontinued making back protection for newer devices (I didn't know this as the kiosk I went to had pre-made backs for the iPhone 6 Plus when I got it). They could make a custom one for $55 which is too much for a piece of rubber.

I ended up ordering a skin set from Amazon to cover the back for $10 or so, but I later decided to go ahead and get the Smart Case for the Air 2. Got a heck of a deal from Best Buy: Open box for $68.99 then $15 off from Reward Zone certificates plus tax brought the price down to $58 out the door. Got it in Midnight Blue to match my iPhone.

However, I wonder one thing if it's the same for you.

Yes its the same on mine - I never noticed it till you had me look - its just a section that's about a little under an inch that has a rougher edge to it. Probably something in the manufacturing process.

I enjoy the look and feel of a "naked" device and don't want anything completely covering the back. However, I took the following approach on both of the iPads I have owned:

I got a small piece of matte "Best Skins Ever" (or equivalent) and cut out 4 small circles, about a half inch diameter, from it. I put these on the back near each corner. This does not detract from the appearance or the feel of the original material. But it does prevent scratching when you lay it on a hard surface. Also, it makes the device more slip resistant when on a slick surface.

Very pleased with the result.
