This thread is full of people conflating AI = Apple Intelligence and AI = Artificial Intelligence.

It would have helped if Apple had called it something else, as the lack of Intelligence in Apple Intelligence is reflecting badly on them.

(iPhone 11 user, no AI but does have some AI 😁 )

I thought i was not using it but conceded that possibly I was and had not realized. So I turned it off. Now, nearly two weeks later nothing has changed in my daily iPad activities. So, it will stay off.

You are using apple intelligence.

I do.

If you're using the first two, then you're using features that have long been supported by machine learning. But I think "Apple Intelligence" refers to the particular set of features enabled by its particular set of on-device (or "Private Cloud Compute") models – that is, those downloaded and readied when turning on the feature in Settings.

Anyone decided to start using Apple Intelligence with iOS26?

I have always had it turned off, and still have it switched off now that I've updated. I've found no real need to use it TBH......Saying that, I wouldn't mind trying image playground with it, but I know its one of those features I'll play with for a while and then never go back to, so haven't bothered! lol

You address a definition issue. IMO "AI" [generically] clearly refers to more than just "the particular set of features enabled by its particular set of on-device (or "Private Cloud Compute") models," yet it is also commonly used as you suggest. My personal response is to ignore the specific [subset] verbiage and use AI to refer to the larger machine learning concept of AI.

I appreciate the effort to distinguish that stuff. In this case, it looks like I was referring there to the branding term "Apple Intelligence" as opposed to the general term "AI."

(I haven't adopted the general term at all. In that case it's because I think it's typically used – in common parlance – to refer mainly to chatbots, and it's clearly too broad for that. So I wind up at least trying to lean towards specificity as you found me.)

I do.
All of that relies on machine learning, no Apple Intelligence capable device needed, and the first two are several years older than Apple Intelligence.

I’ve tried it, and honestly I thought I would be using it more… maybe it’s because I only have it in my iPad, but… I don’t know, I don’t see a clear use case for the writing tools. Maybe I’ll give it another chance, at least, to summarize some texts.

I’m aware how old they are, Apple Intelligence is a new marketing term for on device ML/Ai.

You’ve been able to summarise text in macOS without apple intelligence for over a decade, but that’s still a new Apple Intelligence feature.

I barely use it. I use clean-up and visual intelligence once and awhile but I really don't utilize AI often enough to have an opinion whether I want more or less AI on my devices
