I don't mean to hijack a thread but if I start to find that iPhoto isn't doing the trick anymore and I want to upgrade, would one recommend Aperture or Adobe Lightroom? I know Aperture is an Apple product, but I believe there will be some level headed views.

bump! any suggestions?

What is the benefit of it over saving your pictures in a Pictures folder? For just random pictures storage? (New Mac user here)

I stopped using iPhoto when I realized that instead of simply referencing my raw files, it made copies of them. talk about bloat! I've been using my own file system for years and years now, so the organization thing isn't a problem. I also appreciate being able to manipulate my pics any time I want.

iPhoto is the most useless application.
If you're just storing and organizing then you might as well use and manage your folders properly.
If you want to retouch your photos in any way and not make your pictures look like a 15-year-old's myspace pics then you need to be using some slightly better software.
maybe I just sound like a snob, but I care about my photography and I wouldn't want it to be eaten by the giant black hole that iPhoto is.

I don't mind the bloat knowing that I always have an original to revert to if I want a different crop or do a different effect for a particular reason. If I weren't using iPhoto to manage, I would do the same thing: copy a photo and then work on the copy. I would never modify an original. iPhoto does this by default so I don't have to think about it or manage it. I appreciate that more than the bit of bloat.

I can understand the frustration with bloat, but in the land of cheap 500GB and 1TB hard drives, that's a lot of pictures. My iPhoto library is around 8000 pictures and my iPhoto library is only 23GB. That seems easily manageable even with modest laptop hard drives of 320GB or even 250GB.

I may have to look into Picasa, though. It is getting a number of votes.

Cheers, all.

So Arpeture is a better way to manage your photos?
Isn't Arpeture that $100 app? 0_0

Way better; it isn't just for managing though, it's a photo editor, just like Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop. I initially got it for the organization though, however it has a very powerful photo editor built in as well, which is what it was designed to do.

What I like is the ability to import all of the pictures into its own library; doing this allows you to store the current photos in an external HDD somewhere and work directly off of one lump file that contains the pictures. You can then export individual or entire albums into whatever codec you like.

All editing is done on an automatic copy of the master file so you can edit and customize however you please while always having the original picture there.

But yea, it's 80 bucks and there's a 30 day free trial you can get to see if you like it :) Of course it's a lot of money but you're paying for the editing software as well.

Heck if anyone wants a copy, I have some spares laying around that aren't used (my dad teaches at a uni so they tend to give him software like this from time to time).
