Do you use LaCie external hard drive ?

Someone mentioned Firewire back there and that's a good point. FW800 enclosures aren't easy to find in the UK. I also like that all the cables come in the box.

I also like the solidity and robustness of the enclosures; I shall be removing the 320gb drive from my Quadra to put a 750-1tb drive in there at some point.

I did not know you can actually open up the enclosure and change the drive ! How does that go with the connection behind (inside) ?

I have one with firewire for about 2 years. I like the fact of being able to clone and start up from it. I do not trust it fully because I had a crash a year ago and I had to send it in for repair.

The last one I opened up and swapped the drive in just had standard mounts and connectors; nothing special.

Ok mate, cheers for the info. Thought I don't think I will take the risk to open it up. Also I have a LaCie 320GB and 500GB, both have different power supplies (and both from LaCie UK).

Bought a 250GB drive a few years back; cost me a lot of money and but it's still working to this day; still looks sleek and nice.

I use the 500GB 'Porsche Design' drive. It's good for what it does (binge on data that cannot be kept from my 80GB internal). Barely any problems on mine.. however, there is a lottery involved with the manufacturer of the HDD you get inside the casing (The Maxtor models are giving people trouble.. I snagged a Seagate which has been well-behaved). Hope this helps.

I'm not a big fan. Since they just make the enclosures, you never know what kind of drive will end up inside. Here's my most recent dead LaCie:

Maxtor.... Ugh... Maybe the only brand of hard drive I would never consider, if I knew it was in there.

That said, I did give them another chance and bought one for Time Machine backup on my wife's computer. Mainly because I got a good deal on it. It's running fine, but she has only had it for 3 months. She does complain about it being loud, though.

The included cables are nice. The enclosure I have is a little noisy sometimes (quadra), but having firewire 800 is a pretty big thing for me. I haven't had any problems yet.

I have two LaCie hard drives: 80GB LaCie Rugged Triple-Interface, and 500GB LaCie d2 Quadra (The newer version). I'm happy with them so far, but the Quadra is rather noisy.

I had 2 Lacie D2 320GB hard drives and the power supplies went on both (one after a year and the other 18 months). In Europe they charge a fortune for replacement power supplies (€39 / $61 each). It was more cost effective to go and buy new external hard drives from different vendors.

I've got 3 or 4 LaCies, and use the 320Gb and 500Gb FW800 drives as primary and backup drives for recording bands etc.

Never had a moments problem, the earlier ones are quieter, but not by much.

I had a power cut on 2 320Gb drives in a studio over the summer, right in the middle of mixdown, so both were active, I thought they'd be toast, at least for the data that was being used, but they both came back up without a hitch.

Recommended.
