What do you use your Apple Watch for?

I love the feature that unlocks the computer with the watch :).
My rMBP is going on 5 years old now, but when I got my AW6 this was the feature that I hadn't thought about, and it blew my mind the first time I just flipped the Mac lid open and "click-click." Not a reason to buy a smartwatch by itself, but a nice easter egg for me.

To your original poll, I use the watch for "most" things it has. I love the fact I can load it up with music for running and track the run using just GPS. I also enjoy the way it wakes me up in the morning using the alarm.

Above all, the real "killer app" for me has been the tie-in with Health on the iPhone, and the ability to see trends. The watch records SO MUCH data, even while I am sleeping. It's made me much more self-aware of my activity, though "closing my rings" is mostly a secondary concern. The Move ring is especially arbitrary, so I'm not too beaten-down when I don't close it.

Good luck getting back to a positive place. :)

Thank you for your post.

For anyone in the UK, who’s on o2, you can get a suite of Apple freebies, including Music, Fitness+ and TV+.

I snatched them all up, and intend to start doing some HIIT and core workouts tomorrow morning.

I tried them before, and they are quite good. A good thing to do, when the weather’s too bad for (or you just don’t feel like) walking.

They say that things happen for a reason, so maybe this is just one of those series of events which come along for the bigger picture.

Wishing you well on your own journey, my friend :).

Two factor authentication for work is amazingly convenient. Although I hear Microsoft is scrapping it, thankfully my company uses Duo. I hope it does t change. Apple Pay and Duo makes my Watch worthwhile to have.

I mainly use mine for notifications, but it is always nice when I have reached my move and stand goals.

Sleep tracking. Having coronary heart disease I do track my heart and Watch my diet. I have no symptoms or problems just a little buildup of plaque that was spotted during a CT scan. My father had it worse than I do and it lead to him passing away at age 51. I am now 65 and on meds to keep the plaque buildup from getting. Worse.

I also do use the Watch for my fitness tracking and I do get long daily walks up to 3 miles a day except when we get the rare snow.

I had heart surgery to correct a genetic condition, and eventually bought the Apple Watch in 2018 to assist with my post-surgery recovery. I use it as a fitness tracker first. I am getting AirPods for Christmas, so I’ll be using it for podcasts while walking or cycling on trails.

My wife is just about ready to make the plunge after seeing all the ways I use it.

I have mine set to 400 calories, 30 exercise minutes, and 12 standing hours, and so far I have closed all my rings every day (7 days a week).

I use it mainly for those features, and the other features are just nice to have.

Posing the question to you: Do you use your Apple Watch for fitness tracking, or does that not interest you/fit into your lifestyle?
I hope you are feeling at least a little better today.

I do use the fitness tracking features, with the caveat that it's primarily to complete the fitness-related challenges in the lumihealth app, which in my country, is a collaboration between Apple and my government. I can complete challenges (like closing daily rings, or clocking a number of exercises / activities within a period of time) to earning points, which can then be exchanged for cash vouchers.

I think it has worked for me in some regard, as this has been a fairly challenging year for me, and the various challenges that the app "pushes" me to complete has helped in adding some routine to my daily life. For example, I can earn points for logging my weight and completing breathing exercises daily (with a bonus every 5 days to get you to clock in daily). I get points for closing my rings every day, plus a bonus if I do it 6 times a week. This week, my challenge was to log 3 20-minute runs in the workout app. I do like running, but it's nice to be able to get a little something extra for your accomplishments, either minor or inconsequential.

Reflecting on this, I would likely have been way less motivated to close my rings if there wasn't some kind of extrinsic motivation egging me on (which in this case, is the hitting of milestones and earning of points, as I haven't gotten round to cashing out any of the rewards), and perhaps this is something you can consider trying out. See if there is some app that offers challenges that give you an excuse just to get out. I did manage a 180-day streak, which I recently had to break because I went for my covid booster jab, which knocked me out for a week.

However, I do also use my apple watch for numerous other purposes.

1) Apple Pay - for purchases and (especially) public transport.
2) Music / podcast controls
3) Accessing my passwords synced to the 1password watch app (because my work laptop is separate from my personal iCloud Keychain account)
4) Quick glances of information (eg: word of the day from Lookup, my account balance from my banking app, calculator).
5) I run the Siri watch face, which has my calendar synced, so I can see my day's schedule from there.
6) I also use Siri a fair bit (eg: hey Siri, what's 70% of $159 to find the final price of an item on discount). 😛

Lots of little conveniences here and there.

I use it for date/time/weather/timers/alarms. Also use it to track runs with Nike Run.

I'd like to use it for things like notifications, but they only seem to work about 30% of the time on the watch these days resulting in many, many missed phone calls and texts. Apple's built in fitness stuff all seems to be completely broken after I went from a Series 4 to a Series 7 so I cant be bothered with it anymore. Podcasts hasn't worked *at all* since I had a Series 2. The rest of it seems pretty useless.

Simply as a watch. Yes, I get notifications on it, but, I mainly use it to see what type/who the notification is from.
I rarely ever read the notifications on my watch.

I know, weird, but... 😹

Firstly, sorry to hear about what your going thru. Been there myself, and what pulled me out, among family and friends, was firstly accepting I had depression and stopped being too hard on myself.. followed by a daily exercise routine ( brisk walking and weightlifting), reading / audio books, and healthy/clean food. Heck, I learned to cook and now thoroughly enjoy it!! 🤓

Hang in there. This, too, shall pass!!

As for the watch, it's the ONE thing that keeps me glued to iOS! It's an extension to my phone!

My use case

- Tracking work outs
- Answering and making calls ( when home )
- Responding to txts ( briefly ) including work related msgs on Teams
- Checking emails ( personal and work )
- Music control ( volume, changing tracks )
- Keeping track of notifications
- Responding to 2FA authentication msgs
- Love the mac unlock feature ( especially since my laptop is always in clamshell mode connected to multiple monitors)
- Alarms, stop watch, timers, reminders, weather etc etc

lol I'm sure there's more but yea.. I absolutely love the AW, and I'm still just using the series 4!

I was obese, and using the tracking helped me lose just shy of 150lbs. I also use the timer when cooking or waiting for the 3D printers to print. My wife and I use the walkie talkie function. So yeah, I tend to use it for everything.
We tried using walkie-talkie but it was too hit or miss. I voted everything, but really it’s some but not all things. Fitness, alerts, notifications, timer, access to phone while it’s away, etc. I forgot quick access to time.
