All iPads Do you use your iPad naked? How is it holding up?

Hello,

I recently picked up an iPad mini 4.
I’ve always had cases on my iPads.
Both my iPad Air and air 2 had the official apple smart cases.
Since I wasn’t sure if I was going to keep the iPad or not, I didn’t buy a case right away.
I am now thinking about getting the apple silicone cover and Smart Cover combo as it is heavy discounted at the moment.
But at the same time, I am enjoying using the iPad without any case on it.
It is light and feels smaller in hand.

But since I am kind of ocd about scratches, I am afraid to keep using the iPad without getting the cases for it.

So I ask if anyone here runs their iPads naked and how are they holding regarding scratches and other scuffs?

Cheers!

I had a skin and a thin case on my Air 2 for the same reasons. Was worried about scratching and resell value. I purchased the Apple Smart Keyboard for my 2018 iPad Pro, but it really only stays on if I'm typing or traveling. 75% of my use is without the case and it has held up extremely well so far.

If you're super nerdy about scratches, get a skin for it.

I occasionally use my iPads naked, other times with a case. They hold up just fine. I do however make sure I store them away when I’m done with them.

This is by no means a guarantee that your journey will be the same. The main concern in my opinion is dropping the device- that can cause some real damage.

Besides - scratches on the back don’t bother me, I tend to lol at the display. Then again, I don’t suffer from a neurological disorder.

I also worry about resale value.
Thanks to that, at the time I managed to upgrade my air 1 to air 2 for free as I managed to sell my air for the same amount I ended up getting the air 2 :)
So I try to keep my devices as mint as possible because when I get a new one, I always sell the old one.

I bought a sort of wallet / case for the original 2010 iPad that I used at least some of the time. In addition, I bought a simple leather sleeve with an elastic strap to keep the flap closed on the sleeve-- I've used that ever since 2010 on every 9.7" iPad I've owned (iPad, iPad 3, iPad Air, now iPad Pro 9.7"). This is just a carrying case, however-- when I actually use the device, it is indeed very naked. No cases, no screen protectors, nothing.

I have the smart keyboard cover for my 12.9" iPad Pro (first gen), but its primary function is to be a keyboard. I do have a sleeve of sorts I can use if I want to leave the house with my 12.9", but that's a relatively rare occasion.

My 1st gen 12.9 only has the SKB attached. Virtually perfect and despite the white spot, still my favourite iPad by miles.

For me the iPad is way to slippery to use naked. To each their own but I like the Apple folio just to add grip and cover the screen when not in use. The other day the remote fell on top of my 11" Pro but the folio cover save the iPad. Left a slight dent in the cover.

Since I have children around, I am always fully dressed when I use mine. Not sure that Epstein and his merry band were similarly concerned

I like to have the Smart Keyboard Folio on mine pretty much at all times, even when I'm using the Pencil. Just adds some peace of mind. I will say though that I have not picked up any scratches on any of the non-protected sides over the last year. I'm pretty careful with my stuff though, and I do put it in a sleeve when I take it out of the house just so nothing dings it up.

I usually use a front and back cover for my iPads along with a screen protector, but for the 2018 iPad Pro I couldn't find a screen protector that didn't ruin screen responsiveness, so I've been going without for almost a year. I'm a daily Apple Pencil user and have not picked up any damage from that or anything else so far.

I love the thinness and lightness of my Mini 4 so I keep it bare except for an official smartcover. It still looks pristine.

Honestly, by the time I gave up my Air 2, every other Air 2 on the market was in the same condition and it didn't command a higher price than those. Basically it was in a skin and a case for no real reason. Peopling buying tech that old are usually okay with a few scratches and nicks. If you're upgrading every year, then definitely keep a case on it. But if you're now keeping your iPad longer, I say don't worry about it. Its age will drop resale value more than a few scratches will.

I usually used a case on my iPad since the first one. The original iPad, I used an Incase Book Jacket case, but of course a good amount of fake leather came off of it since it was heavily used.

Currently, I don’t use a case on the iPad Pro 9.7 besides the Smart Keyboard, which covers the screen. Since I bought it used, I didn’t really buy a case for it beside the Smart Keyboard cover. I don’t drop my iPad Pro 9.7, so it’s not a problem. However, my iPad Pro 11 uses a Logitech Smart Folio Pro since I don’t want this expensive device get damaged or bent.
The iPad Pro 11 was new in box, which is why I want to protect it and also have a keyboard.

Yes using an iPad without a protection front and back is the same as getting exposed to modern day adult virus (If you know what I mean) There is no substitute for a good cover front and back it you wanna keep your iPad scratch free. Yes using it with care also helps ! But without any case ot cover only God would save you !!

I’m seeing very little wear in mine. Most obvious is little nick by the headphone jack. I’m sure each iPad has had a short tumble or 2 but they’re just so much bigger and easier to grip than my phone that I really do not worry about dropping or damaging them— but perhaps they’re not getting used the same ways or as heavily as others.

I tried using my 10.5” naked near launch since I used bulky cases previously on other iPads, but I ended up getting a silicone case after a month or so.

First of all it is super slippery. I always felt like I never had a good grip on it and could slip from my hands at any moment, luckily it never did. Sure, it’s nice feeling the aluminum, but after awhile that wares off.

Second is I felt like I could never set my iPad down without scratching the back. I kept wanting to put it on the kitchen granite counter tops for instance, but I felt like it was going to bang or rub against the iPad.

Those are really the only main gripes I had with it.

I found the sweet spot though. Instead of a bulky case I got a slim silicone case that fits it perfectly.
Doesn’t add any noticeable weight, I can still see the color on the back, I can actually grip it, I can set it on anything and not have to worry at all, and lastly it pairs really well with the Smart Keyboard case.

Since I have 3 Kids and a wife around and see what their naked IPads look like, Daddy”s pro stays fully dressed.

I use mine as it came. I don’t beat the hell out of it. It’s aluminum and I treat it as such. No nicks, dings, or scratches. Even at home or out and about regularly.

I would never use a case. They increase bulk and weight so much that it takes a lot of the enjoyment out of using iPads (and iPhones) for me, especially a device like the mini. Most of the mini’s appeal is in its lightness. And I’ve found cases to be completely unnecessary. I’ve had my iPad mini for 3 years, I don’t take particularly good care of it, and it’s always been naked and has never gotten a scratch. But I use it almost exclusively at home, which is a controlled environment.

Skins aren’t ideal either (bare aluminum feels nicer than plastic skins) but they are much more tolerable than cases since they don’t add any bulk or weight. Unlike my mini, my 12.9 iPP travels in my bag with other items and goes out into the world every day, so I have a clear skin on the back and a smart keyboard cover on the front. The cover is only because I need the keyboard. If I didn’t, then I would just have a screen protector film. After 3 years, the 12.9 is also in mint condition.

I say go bare and enjoy your device as it was intended, or go with a skin at most, but that’s just me.
