I can't be the only one here super pumped about the rumor of a 4" phone can I?

I mean, Engadget, Gizmodo, Macrumors, basically everyone is reporting that the next iPhone will have a 4" screen...

This!

That's basically a dream come true as far as I'm concerned. :D

That mockup looks hideous though. I hope they add at least 2m to each side. But now it looks goofy and not as balanced.

IMO, they'll keep 960x640 since they changed the resolution last year.

If you keep that res. and want at least 300dpi, then the max you can go is 3.8". So iPhone 5 will either be the same 3.5" or maybe 3.8".

If we’ll see a 4-inch display, it will have 1120x640 pixels

A slightly slimmer device, same height.

Where did you get this Image from? Because I can tell you that's totally doctored, the side bezel will never be that thin, how are cases supposed to coincide with it?

A Super AMOLED and retina would just be out of this world. It won't come this year, maybe 2012, but 2013 certainly.

Case manufacturers need to deal with it, as they always needed to. Got it from http://www.9to5mac.com/53901/iphone...-display-and-thinner-bezel#IDComment131667854

IPS is just fine. Even at 4-inches.

I'm all for a 4" screen, however it's just not feesable on the size of the phone. It would need a redesign or else cases will cover the sides of the screen.

IPS is fine for the moment, but AMOLED is a must for either 2012 or 2013. We don't want apple lagging behind competitors in the hardware department do we now?

Take a ruler. 4-inches at todays size are possible. Its just 1120 instead of 960 pixels.
But I think the iPhone still needs to get a bit slimmer though.

Besides I agree that OLED is the future. Just for the time being, IPS is my preference due primarily to sub pixel density being more then 3 times higher on LCD.

Where do you get that number from? And are you comparing some specific implementation of OLED because I think you're wrong on the Samsung Galaxy S2 (and all current gen OLED screens using SAMOLED+) which use the full RGB subpixel arrangement.

I know this thread is old but why would Apple use Super AMOLED when Super AMOLED plus is being used now?

I used to have a Droid X...

It was my first "smartphone" and I liked it, but it was VERY big in my pocket and I struggled to get it out fast when it rang. I definitely like the form factor of the IPhone 4. If I could keep the same size and slightly increase the screen size, I would buy the IPhone 5. As far as the operating systems, there is no comparison between the smoothness of the IOS and Android. I can't tell you how many times I had battery pulls to get the Droid X working again. As a sidenote, the Droid X had bluetooth pairing problems in my car, not loading contacts. The IPhone paired flawlessly and loaded all my contacts. With the latest Android update ( 2.2.1) my wife's Droid Pro lost the bluetooth pairing in her car!! Android has a lot of work to do to catch up to the IOS.

Apple needs to go to a 4" Screen

So...as a Mac user and iPhone admirer...but Android user...I must say that it is time for Apple and Jobs to move to 4" displays. Motorola has proven with the Atrix4G (my personal phone) that you can have a high resolution 4" display, dual core processor and lots of other hardware in a device the same size as the iPhone4...well not exactly the same size, but essentially the same size. I wanted an iPhone and hoped that they would increase the size of the screen...but they didn't. And then with Antennagate...I opted to go with the Atrix.

My wish list for the next iPhone4G is below:

- 4" retina display with the resolution increased to maintain the existing pixel density of the current display
- Same overall size
- Offer the phone in 32GB and 64GB sizes. My Atrix has 48GB of storage...Apple needs to go larger than 32GB.
- Dual Core processor - we know this is all but locked in based on the iPad2
- 1GB of RAM - like my Atrix.
- Make it 4G. And as an Atrix4G user...I can say I would rather have AT&T's 4G than Verizon's battery sucking LTE. 4G is plenty fast enough and combined with iOS's better processor management - I suspect an iPhone4G would be just as fast as an Android on LTE...if not faster.

If Apple brings out the phone described above...then I will trade up from my Atrix this fall. Here's hoping.

And screw over iP4 owners? Not going to happen.

I'd prefer to stick with the 3.5 inch screen size/res and make the phone a little smaller around it.

I would love a bigger iPhone, but it is not going to happen. All the apps would either look very different or have to be reformatted

I used to really want a larger screen, but since I bought an iPad 2, I really don't care. Apple gained an iPad sale, but now I have no desire at all to upgrade my 3GS. Ip4 screen is still too damn small to do anything on comfortably.

4" is doable, but not at the current resolution of 960x640. Mainly because 3:2 is a lot wider than the 16:9 ratio currently used by 4"+ phones.

Changing the aspect ratio would mean a significant overhaul to the OS itself. And to the massive app library.

3.7" with a narrower bezel? Plausible. 4"? Not going to happen. (s)AMOLED(+)? Nope.
