No. I want something more radical than that. A full-screen display for content consumption without selfie camera and Dynamic Island/Face ID.

Home button can be added as a virtual button, just like Samsung did many years ago. This button provides instant response and speed. Touch ID can be built either inside the back Apple logo or into a sleep/wake button on the side of the phone, just like on the iPads.

Moreover we don’t need more buttons and I would have removed all of them except sleep/wake button. No need for useless camera button or action button, gimme back the mute switch… or remove altogether, I am fine with using mute from the control center.

But FaceID must go away. Useless IR tech that makes my eyes rain. For many years I thought I am susceptible to OLED eye strain but it turned out that this was FaceID that was responsible for that. Turns out these little IR lasers are not as universal or innocent as Apple’s marketing makes us believe

No, thanks.

It can stay in the history books just like 3G, 4-inch displays, and mono speaker.
Thats actually a bit to unpack!

4" displays were fine when phones were not content portals; indeed there is an arguement that basic human ergonomics should have prevented phones from getting any bigger at all. If we didn't have social media and Youtube, would a 4" phone not be ok?

Phone speakers are pretty crappy regardless of model. I often wonder if we've forgotten what real sound quality looks like by inflicting tinny stereo on ourselves on purpose. I mean, they don't make much difference in a Facetime call and if your phone is no longer for media consumption thats all you'd ever hear from it.

No to the double-sided idea, I’d be fine with a traditional home button phone.

I still use an iPhone 8 for music and I love it. As a main… maybe a Plus? Battery life even on a good iOS version isn’t that amazing (the typical 7-8 hour SOT with light, efficient use is fine. Outdoors and LTE (and especially using the camera a little) and it collapses so I think a 5.5-inch Plus-like iPhone SE 4 would be great.

The screen of a Plus would also be great. I had a 7 Plus and it’s the only iPhone I ever sold (traded it in because it had a broken camera from the factory and I couldn’t replace it). I regretted that trade-in, it would still be on iOS 10 and it would be a perfect music iPhone.

The regular iPhone 8 is fine for that though, I love it.
