On a long flight I'll watch a few movies on mine but in general, I'd much rather just wait until I get home and watch things on my big screen TV. I'm still using the original iPad though, so maybe the retina display makes a big difference for videos. I do love my iPad and when I'm on the couch I almost always prefer it over my laptop for surfing the web, checking emails, etc. But I can't really understand why so many people think it's just as good as a big screen when it comes to watching videos. Can someone enlighten me?

I can't imagine anyone saying it's "just as good as a big screen". But most people don't have a big screen TV in their bedroom (if they have one at all), so an iPad can be a great way to watch movies/tv in bed.

Also, any time you're on the go (as you mentioned), it's about the best device out there for watching movies. I'd imagine that this is when most people end up using it as a video player.

With apps like Sky Go I can take my Sky subscription anywhere with me and live stream every channel in my subscription plus a host of on demand movies and TV shows via 3G or WiFi. I can also download a favourite TV show or movie to my iPad prior to leaving the house, saving on data usage.

The iPad is so handy for just lying in bed watching TV or a movie on Netflix, especially when your wife commandeers the bedroom's 42" television for watching reality TV or soaps. It's all about convenience, sure I prefer big screen and surround sound but late at night that's not possible and it's great to have a wealth of content available on this pane of glass next to my bed.

I have a 45 min train ride to and from work every day - The Ipad is perfect for watching a tv show that I would not have time to watch at home...

I don't own a TV.

The ipad fills that gap along with my laptop for file types or certain live streaming events that don't work on the ipad.

Saves a lot of money for me.

I rarely ever watch movies or tv shows on any of my iPads. I have a 55" 3D plasma for viewing that sort of media.

That being said, I do watch a ton of trailers and YouTube on my iPads out of pure convenience. I do sometimes watch cable via the time Warner app when I am in my garage tinkering with something.

Maybe they mean, "hold it closer to your face and it will be as good as a big screen"

I can see ipad's a great way to watch Netflix. I do have Neflix app, buti dunno why as I have a big screen in my bedroom, I have Netfilx...

Maybe be good on hoilday.... but how often does that happen

Maybe its would be a good excuse FOR a holiday, I dunno.

Having said our household have been "cut-the-cord" for 9+ months, and we're not able to go back. :) My only regret is i wish i hasn't done this sooner.

I love that you took the time to quote my reply and then ignored my point because you have a big screen in your room. Not a lot of people do, necessarily. Also, if you can afford a big screen for the bedroom, you can afford a holiday. ;)

Anyway, I know that this is also just my particular scenario, but the largest screen in my room is the 21.5 iMac I'm writing this on. And it's far enough from my bed that the iPad mini just makes for a better viewing experience at the end of the day.

Yep. The latest has been Vikings and Sons Of Anarchy. I cannot believe I never watched the latter at all.

Netflix, Amazon VOD, NCAA March Madness Live have also made it to my watch list as well on my ipad 4.

I watch movies from Netflix on my bed. I am not comfortable watching movie with crappy office chair and my back is bugging me. :apple:

Yes! I watch Netflix, I watch Cinemax's Banshee and premium channel movies on my iPad all the time!

Watched The Collection movie this past weekend on my Mini :)

I watch Netflix and HBO GO all the time on my iPad. Very convenient because I can bring it to the gym, my room, work, wherever!

I do. I travel a lot. For the planes of just waiting at the airport it's great. And I almost always have wifi in my hotel rooms so I watch there too. The TV channels are usually pretty slim in hotels.

I have several TV seasons on my iPad for those times I don't have access to wifi. Tats one reason I'm planning to upgrade to a 128 gig at the next release. I had to remove all my music just to make room on my 64 gig iPad 3. Not really an issue, I just loaded it all on a little 8 gig nano. So I use that for music and audio books.

Yes I do watch amazon prime and MLB on my ipad while working out on my treadmill. Sits perfectly on treadmill and I have the sound of the shows playing via airplay through my Bowers and Wilkins speaker while the video displays on ipad. Great way to blow through an hour on the treadmill.

How badly does MLB drain the battery? Do you keep it charged while streaming it?

Being able to buy vs afford are two different things, of which most people don't understand. ;)

I use mine to watch TV and movies, mostly away from home. I like the apps some of the channels have, like ABC, NBC, and History. I dont have a dvr or cable, so the apps make it convenient. I have a 40" TV and Apple TV in the bedroom. I'm hoping they allow apps on it soon.

Rather like most movies don't really need the full theater experience, most tv shows don't either. For many folks being able to sit outside, or curl up in bed is a plus.
