Dock has gone crazy (Doolally)

My Dock has gone crazy. We call it Doolally in England. It gives me a long row of recent apps, but for instance Camino will have 20-25 icons. 😡 The real apps are located at the very top of the Dock, but selection is hard as they jump about. 😱 Not overly concerned as I can use DragThing instead. But I would like to stop it.

I have had the problem ever since some software updates last week.

Any suggestions of a fix?
