Sometimes when I restart my machine running 10.5.8 my desktop background appears but my dock, top menu and desktop icons do not appear. If I force a shutdown and restart, everything comes up normally. This doesn't happen every time I restart, but it has started only recently. I've repaired permissions already. Anyone have any suggestions?

Dock, menu, desktop icons missing on startup

HD/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
Move that plist file to your Desktop.
Restart. (this should make a new one in Preferences)
Better? If so, then Trash the file on the Desktop.
