Dock modifications & Safari bookmarks do not stick

Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard 10.6.2

Safari no longer saves new bookmarks. Same with the dock; whenever I add or remove an application to and from the dock, when I restart the computer, changes I have made did not stick and I am back to the old bookmarks and original dock.

Anyone has an idea of what I may have done wrong and how to fix this?
