So Ive been watching the good Doctor since 1970. I love all incarnations. At the moment I'm watching the 6th Doctor on my rewatch odyssey.
Is anyone on here joining the mass rewatch tonight of Vincent and the Doctor and joining on Twitter?

Unfortunately for myself, this is not a series I got into, not that I watched and rejected it, but just never watched it. I’m sure there are Dr. Who fans here. If someone was to try to start watching this, where would be a good place to start? I don’t know if going back to the beginning is practical.

Start with the latest Doctor, number 13, played by the fantastic Jodie Whittaker

Last watched Seeds of Doom and Masque of Mandragora. Over the next couple of weeks, plan to watch the series straight through until Horror of Fang Rock.

The experience of watching Doctor Who: Tom Baker - The Complete Season Seven, prompted me to do this. (In May, the BBC is releasing Doctor Who: Tom Baker: The Complete Season 3 on Bluray, but PAL is still PAL.)

Cool. Ive been watching all of Who for a number of years. Ive reached the 6th Doctor era and its the two Doctors next. I've got the final season, season 26, in a Blu-ray box set which I'm saving until the end.

I feel like I should be a fan, but oddly it's never really gripped me despite watching it on and off since it was revived. I liked Christopher Eccleston and his storylines in S1, but I always thought David Tennant's portrayal was a bit on the Mary-Sue side of things, which is a massive bore for me. That's when I stopped watching the first time (though everyone says that's when storylines were at their best & he's probably the most popular overall). I started watching again for a bit when he quit, I liked (sidekick) Karen Gillan, Matt Smith was I guess marginally better in the role than Tennant, and most recently I watched and enjoyed some of the episodes with with Jenna Coleman and Peter Capaldi. Haven't watched again since then, and from chatter about it I hear from time to time the storylines are overly complex and quite weak currently.

Just wanted to point out there is a big WHO thread already... not to rain on your parade :)

Might get more attention there.

I would start with the 10th Doctor (David Tennant). That's where I, who knew about Doctor Who, but never really watched, started. BBC America had one of their marathons and I had decided to see what it was all about.

In my belief, the 10th can explain by showing what the Doctor is, what the Doctor stands for and why the Doctor does what the Doctor does. The 10th is more raw emotionally. See the 12th Doctor for visceral speeches that drive it all home.

Once you understand then it makes it much easier to view any era of the Doctor in the light of who and what the Doctor is.

I disagree. 9th Doctor is the best place to start. It has the new style, and it blends into the 10th, it also starts the whole Rose Tyler arc. If memory doesn't fail me, Captain Jack's story starts during the 9th Doctor too, and so does the Face of Boe.

Eccleston was good as the 9th, but I think it was only towards the end of that season that he started to get into a groove. Unfortunately, his issues with the BBC, et. al cut his time short.

I just don't see (or didn't see) exactly what you are seeing I guess.

Well, it's not really what I see it. 9th Doctor IS the start of the new Doctor Who, and it's the start of many of the most memorable stories, it's the start of the relationship between the Doctor and Rose which also makes the transition to the 10th quite meaningful, and it's also the start of Captain Jack (which later goes into Torchwood). It also begins (or re-begins if you truly want) the narration of the new Dalek's/Gallifrey storyline. I think it would be silly to not watch the few episodes of the 9th Doctor.

I don't disagree that it would be silly not to watch them. I just think, at least for me, that the 10th is better at showing the qualities of the doctor than the 9th. Yes, Rose (Bad Wolf) is an important aspect, but to me, the interactions with Donna Noble have a larger impact. Without Donna Noble there is a missing element to the 12th Doctor.

The whole return of the Master also begins with the 10th Doctor. The 9th Doctor also doesn't have the start of River Song, an act that plays out all the way up to the 12th Doctor.

Yes, the 9th is the beginning (of NuWho), but to me it's the 10th that does a better job of explaining about the Doctor.

I don't disagree that 10th is a much better Doctor than 9th (heck, probably of all the new Doctors). However, as a starting point I'd recommend the 9th; that's all I am saying.

Tennant was simply incredible. As for the Rose-Donna impact, I'd say that it depends. On a personal level, Rose is probably the closest companion to the Doctor, you could feel the love and dynamics between the two. As a character arc, Donna's was simply amazing, one of the best character progress in the history of TV in my opinion, with an insanely good ending.

As for the best acting, in my opinion the award goes to the 12th in Heaven Sent. Capaldi's solo acting in that episode is something that truly defines what "good acting" means.
