thinking of getting the wife an upgrade to her iPhone 6. she doesn't use it often as has work phone, but main reason for getting her a new one would be she could then upgrade her Apple Watch and get all the new faces.

was thinking SE but does 12 mini make this a bad buy?

I don’t think it makes the SE a bad buy. There is nothing wrong with the SE and it is a lot more affordable than the new mini. Given your wife doesn’t use her personal phone a lot, I would go with the SE and save yourself some cash. Maybe get her a new watch band as well, or use the extra for date night.

Depends on what's needed or wanted and how much there's to spend. There are still fairly significant price differences in play between those phones. There are differences between having Face ID or Touch ID, OLED or LCD screen, home button or no home button, etc.

If your wife doesn’t use the phone that much, the SE makes perfect sense if she’s happy with what she has.

If bought from Apple you have 14 days to return it if she decides she’d prefer the newer device.

If your wife just wants something cheap which is pretty snappy, can call and text, and has decent build quality, the SE is a great choice. Anything beyond that and the 12 mini becomes more appealing.

The are very different iPhones in cost, features, size, and design.

I personally am torn between the two for when I need a phone to replace my SE1 when it dies.

I would much rather have Touch ID, home button, and cost of the SE2, but I like the design, size, and camera of the 12 Mini.

I hate the design of the SE2, especially the rounded edges, but I really don't want Face ID of the 12 Mini.

At the same time, my closest friend hates the squared edges of the 12 Mini, and loves the design of the SE2.

So, different phones for different people, or there are people like me that are torn between the aspects of both phones.

Have you asked her which one she likes?

If she still has a 6, then getting her the 12 mini will ensure that she will have the device for just as long, especially with 5G growing every year.

If she will have an issue with losing TouchID, then get her the SE.

But you should ask her.

I think Apple are testing the waters with the iPhone 12 Mini, between the 12 Mini and SE 2.

I would say this is down to what device you feel best suits your usage, you cannot go wrong with either of you are just looking for a small smartphone, but if there are more specific things you may want to wait for the reviews to come out and then decide.

I’ve just bought my wife a new SE (2020)

I offered to buy her one of the more expensive models but she said that she would prefer to have one with TouchID. If she isn’t too bothered about Face ID and some of the other features you may as well keep it simple, save some money and go for the SE.
