Does 9.1 return better battery life than 9.0.2?

My phone didn't do this from iOS 7.0-9.0.2. Started on 9.1 for me.

I am familiar with iOS and battery usage. It was not showing any app that was being used in the background for nearly that long, and background app refresh was turned off. Again, this first occurred for me with 9.1.



Day one after a restore in iTunes and iTunes backup restore seems to be looking better. Time will tell.

Yeah, not buying that for a second.

Apple quotes 4G browsing time at 12 hours for iPhone 6 and above. At your claimed prior loss of 2% every 40 minutes, that would mean you'd get more than 33 (!) hours of browsing time off a single charge. The only thing you can do with an iPhone and get 33 hours off the battery is set it down with the screen off and not touch it.

Heck, just walking through an area with mediocre signal strength and not touching your phone for 40 minutes will drain more than 1-2%.

This sounds like a classic case of not paying close attention to your battery life until you update the OS and want to "compare" it to what you erroneously believe you had before.
 
I was getting dreadful drain with iCloud signed in and my phone getting warm, but battery usage showing nothing over the course of several days.

Since signing out, battery life has been significantly better
 
I'd like to join this conversation now as it's quite obvious that this is becoming a wide spread problem. I'm going to keep this as brief as possible but this is what I've been through. Everything you are about to read below is exactly the same for my wife who is using an iPhone 5S.

iPhone 6.

- Terrible battery drain over night on 9.0.1 - battery died when it had 60% when I went to sleep, this raised the alarm for me.
- Stuck with it for a couple of days then did a restore...nothing
- Started seeing rumours about Facebook app being an issue
- Installed 9.0.2 - No change... perhaps worse
- Went to 9.1 PB V5 - No Change
- Uninstalled Facebook - No Change
- CHANGED BATTERY... you guessed it, no change.
- Installed 9.1 GM - No change.
- Read an article talking about how Comms centre was stuck on cycle and and overworking the processor requiring a full factory restore.
- Performed factory reset and DID NOT restore from back up, only synced iCloud account.

Well sh*t, I dunno what the hell else I'm meant to do. This needs a fix and it needs a fix quick... also, it needs some acknowledgment of an issue from Apple...

Any thoughts welcome.

Mine's really bad with 9.1 on my iPhone 5.

I've moved to a 6s now but my 5 is still on my desk and kept charged because I use it as an iPod sometimes. It has no SIM in it any more and is now permanently left in aeroplane mode. I just had a look (the first time I've touched it since taking it off the charger 21 hours ago) and the battery is at 78%.

Even though it's an old phone that seems to me to be really shocking drain for a phone left completely untouched, in aeroplane mode, and with background app refresh set to off. (The Facebook app isn't installed either).
 
You just reminded me... I spent 12 hours on a place to Japan a week ago... Airplane mode isn't doing ANYTHING to stop the drain. This is a bug.

There's something going on in your case as most people aren't experiencing the level of issues that you are describing (if any at all).
 
I started having issues after upgrading to 9.1. I have had my 6S for a few weeks now and never had any battery issues with iOS 9.0.2 (although I had the unable to wake bug few times and that was really nasty). The phone used to last for a whole day with a lot of usage. After update to 9.1 it started acting weird. One day it would last OK, the other day it will get slightly warmer and the battery would drain in a matter of hours. If I put in Low Power mode when at 20% it would somehow help. When I look at my battery stats, it seems the Safari has used more than half the battery. Well, I am mostly browsing indeed, but I am always browsing one and same stuff for one and same time and it's not normal for the phone to last whole day once, and only 1-2 hours next time. I usually leave it on the charger for the night and get it at the morning. Since 9.1 there are at least few times when the phone is at 100%, has not been used at all and is hot. Then it drains battery pretty fast. I usually restart it and that helped but not today. I have set it as a new phone when I bought it, so I don't want to reset it again since I have already gathered some health stats, etc. I am very disappointed in Apple lately. This is my third iPhone and I have been a loyal Apple user for the last 6 years however I am getting more and more frustrated and disappointed. I am really considering a switch to Android if the current trend of fixing one bug and introducing another continues. Besides, my iPad 3 has become so sluggish with each newer iOS that it is currently almost unusable.

I'm not so sure I agree... I think people are reporting issues at all of these points they just perhaps aren't going to the lengths I am to try and resolve the issue. I think the fact that my wife is having the same issues help me to see that this isn't an isolated incident.
 
Battery life is ok for me on my 6s. Unplugged the phone at about 7:30 AM and didn't have to charge it until about 8 pm. Not too bad.

Not very scientific 😀
I am obsessive about battery life when I get a new phone. For the first week or so I work out how long I can get from 100% down to 99% with light & heavy use, then down through every 10% point to zero. I can tell after a couple of charge cycles whether my battery is good after an iOS update or phone exchange.

For instance, with my standard morning usage pattern if I get over 45 mins on a 6S+ from 100-99% then it's good. If I get over 1h 50 from 100-90% then it's good...and so on. I save screenshots to guide me.😀

There are apps which allow you to extract specific information from an iTunes backup and selectively restore to a new phone backup. Here is what I do - I backed up my old 6, only extracted sms.db and related files. Setup my 6s as a new phone and then backed it up to iTunes. Next I took the sms files from the old backup(6) and overwrote the 6s backup and then restored from backup.

Try restoring the device and then signing out of iCloud. I found that solved my issues. (It's how my 5S is currently configured because it had the same problem)

I'm currently collecting power log data on my 6S to submit a bug report to Apple.

I lost 27% earlier this morning in 4 hours with the phone doing nothing at all. (Battery page showed no app activity). Wifi was on, no sim installed.

I charged to 100% again, and it's currently 15% down in 4.5 hours, again with not using the phone.

peaking at this mornings data, the iPhones Temp was roughly 22°C while at 100%, going to 32°C while draining.

🙁 That's not good is it. Apple shouldn't release updates that aren't at least as good on battery as the previous. It's an essential feature.

There is no way to know if it does cause a battery drain until the masses get it. There are so many variables that cause battery drain that it doesn't mean its update related.
