I jail broke my phone 3 days after I got it. I dled some apps right away and was worried that it would lag. As soon as I did dl everything, I thought it felt a little sluggish in loading time and what not. So I went to my bro's 3g and did a few tests and if anything, mine loaded things faster. So I guess it feeling laggy was just in my head. No problems so far.

its funny cause the primary reason I jailbroke my phone was for The Ivillian theme (HTC Android Sense) I have a 3GS and I have noticed that it has made my phone like a second slower.. Its amazing how you can notice 1 second.. When I saw winterBoard on your list I was like damn, cause I was hoping it was the Jailbreak and not the one app I wanted.. BUt u know what though. I think I can give up a second for that theme.. Its not like my keyboard is laggin..

No.

Jailbreaking does not have any impact on performance.

A word of caution though: while the jailbreaking process does not cause performance problems, it does make it possible to install some software that has been known to cause performance problems. Things like WinterBoard, MobileSubstrate, and Intelliscreen will take up additional RAM (and a bit of CPU time). Sometimes the performance cost of such features is worth it to some users, other times it's not.

Personally I don't use WinterBoard (due to the RAM usage), although my phone is jailbroken. I've got a ton of packages installed from various Cydia repos, and have experienced exactly zero performance problems.

What is it making a second slower? On a 3GS I would not expect Winterboard to slow down, for instance, opening an application by a full second. I don't really even notice any difference on my 3GS with Winterboard, MobileSubstrate, and Several other apps running. YMMV.

Agreed. On my iPhone 3G I noticed a performance decrease. On my 3GS, not so much. I can't hardly live without mobile substrate though so the slight decrease is way worth it. The thing is, my jailbroken 3GS is still way faster than a non jailbroken 3G, and compared to my brothers unmodified 3GS it's less than a quarter of a second slower with winterboard themes and about 6 mobile substrate tweaks.

What exactly do you use other than winterboard??

Don't listen to OrangeDog, he's totally against Jailbreaking so is bound to be biased.

I've had my phone jailbroken since day one. The jailbreaking alone causes no performance issues. Installing things like winterboard and intelliscreen that run constantly are a drain on memory and your battery. Stay clear of these. E

Even installing things like SBSettings and backgrounder causes little memory drain if you know how to use them properly.
Truth.

I've tinkered around with all sorts of things. If you jailbreak on install the right apps, there will be no lag.

I upgraded my 3G to iOS 4. Jailbreak with redsn0w ONLY installing Cydia. When I did it and added the multitasking feature and wallpapers, it ran like a dog. After only installing the Cydia option, I have added SBSettings, Backgrounder, biteSMS, and mxTube, and it runs great. As stated above, you do need to know how to use them properly (don't put 27 apps in Backgrounder mode), but with basic intelligence you should be good.

I have noticed no slow down with my 3GS running Winterboard, but the 3GS does have a faster processor than the 3G and that is probably the difference.

Re: Does a JailBreak Slow the IPhone Down?

Winterboard slows down 2G and 3G phones consideralbly. Jailbreaking alone has no performance effect.

Now the 3GS has a faster processor so you don't hear those folks complain as much.

JB'ing

The actual jailbreak process does not slow you down. What causes your iDevice to lag is certain applications or utilities which eat up your ram :(.
For example, if you have a 2g Ipod and download a package which allows you to multitask and use homescreen wallpaper, you will start noticing your device slowing down. Although jailbreaking does not slow your device down, Cydia, which is automatically installed when you JB, will slow you down, but it isn't very noticable :p.

Have fun Jailbreaking ;)

My iphone is terribly slow and i think its b/c of jailbreak

Hi this message is for JbNoob or whoever can help. I dont know who said that jailbreaking does not effect the performance because my phone is extremely slow. I mean games lag rediculously. My phone freezes as if theirs a a major virus... If the jailbreak program is not the reason, i am really in concern of what is!?... Anyone have ANY suggestions of what i can do to fix this problem...? I have already tried:
-resetting the networking settings
-Clearing cache, cookies, & history
-Keeping my text messages completely erased

I dont know what else to do. I do have winterboard installed, do you suggest i delete that? Thanks so much for your help & responses!

In the middle of a game is will lag out to the front. The slide to open takes so long to light up. It has a major hesitation before i can do almost anything. Sometimes it will work ok but thats no more than about 5 minutes perday! WHAT IN THE WORLD COULD I DO?! Anyone have ANY suggestions of what i can do to fix this problem...? I have already tried:
