Does AirPlay display iPhone 4S videos as 1080p?

As far as I know, the AppleTV 2 is only capable of outputting 720p.

What happens if I use AirPlay on my iPhone 4S to display a 1080p recording? Will it show as 1080p on my TV or will it downscale to 720p?

It will automatically downscale to 720P.

So what is the "logical" conclusion? Using only logic, I would have to conclude that it wouldn't work at all - which isn't the case.

Logic give us 3 choices:

1) It will play at 1080p
2) It will play at 720p
3) It will play nothing


We can rule out #1 since the Apple TV won't do it. So logically we are left with #2 or #3.

#3 will only work if Apple has decided to brag about building a feature that doesn't work. Thus, I have to conclude that the answer is #2.

That's logic.

OK, I should have said "using only logic, I might conclude that it won't work at all". The point I was trying to make was that the poster I quoted was not answering the OP's question, he was just making an unhelpful comment.

If you really want 1080p from the iphone to your hdtv you can buy a cable from apple that will let you display 1080p on your screen... Even mirroring at 1080p!

airplay has always been able to do 1080p. You have to use a Mac Mini and an airplay server.
