Its showing good health with: designed capacity 1751 actual capacity 1700 and cycle count 180 Any ideas what physical ailment could be causing the thing to constantly log errors?

It might just be a bug. Try a clean install of 8.3 and see how it goes. If the problem still exists then take it to an Apple store for an exchange.
