It all depends on what you are allowed in the army...

I know with most Western military you have downtime, and are allowed to amuse yourself however you wish exactly like getting home from your normal job - I have seen photos from friends of a group of them stationed on a ship who were playing as a band - all of them having personal musical instruments on board (the photo I am thinking of of them playing on the helipad during a clear time on ship).

I would do a bit of checking and see what you are allowed, if you are allowed a computer ten keeping it is an obvious choice - being able to surf the web, listen to music and watch dvds is always nice.

If you are not allowed it you have two choices. Either cut your losses, sell it now then upgrade when your tour is up - you will then have a current computer when you are out, and lose a lot less money by selling it when it is still a recent model, rather than 3 years old. The downside is that you won't have a computer - so you lose the use of it if you are on a break at home or any other opportunities that a computer would come in useful unless you have other access.
Option #2 is to just keep it, you don't have to faff about selling it and do have it available when it could be useful. The downside is that since you would own it longer, it would depreciate in value more...

Someone did point out a good idea above if you intend selling it - if the army works in blocks, then it may be quite likely that a lot of guys are leaving when you are arriving, and if they are not allowed the use of a personal computer, then some may be on the lookout for a new model for themselves...

Thanks for the reasonable response. Umm I think I will consider selling it before the apple care runs out. I really would like to keep the Alum Macbook cause it just looks gorgeous lol
So... I will have to sell it before Christmas I guess... Hopefully I won't be needing much of needs of Macbook when I am in the University during that time...

Thanks everyone for all your help! I really appreciate your efforts ;)

p.s. I wish my Korean army is like the Western army lol I am pretty sure that personal Laptop won't be allowed since personal shampoo or skin lotion isn't even allowed in the Korean Army... Even if I sell the Macbook I really wish I will get into the American army base in Korea :C

How did you get the opportunity to study abroad? I thought it was hard for North Koreans to leave the country and they couldn’t go on vacations in other countries and such. Especially studying abroad, isn’t that like taboo? Wouldn’t that than westernize you? That is not what the North Korean government wants. Sorry, but from what I’ve heard on the media, it does not seem like something the North Korean government would do. How did you even get money for a Mac or how are your parents affording your schooling? North Korea is suppose to be communist, where everyone is equal. I’ve just never ever met a North Korean. Which is funny because in most of my classes now, I am one of the only white males. I live in Toronto by the way. I’ve met a dime a doze South Koreans. You don’t need to answer any of my questions, if it is too personal. I am just really curious. Especially now with like Laura Ling being sent to jail for taking pictures over the North Korean border.

Oh I would sell it. Well I wouldn’t go to the army…. Even if I had to. I would just go missing.

I don't know how it works in the ROK armed forces but in the US military all active duty members are encouraged to use/have computers because it aids in professional education. Most US military bases provide free internet access for its service members including wifi in barracks and BEQ's.

While it's true that in "basic training" computers won't be allowed, once basic training is completed, the rules relax somewhat so that service members have fairly normal lives. You can own a computer, own a car, own a cell phone, live off base, have weekends and holidays off etc. So if you think that you have a legit shot at winning the KATUSA lottery keep the thing.

Also, unless the ROK military is stuck in the stoneage, which I doubt, I'm betting that the ownership of personal computers is allowed because at the very least, military education can be conducted on computers.

Corrupt.tears-the guy isn't North Korean. He's South Korean. Military service is mandatory for all South Korean men. The South Koreans that you know are dodging their military obligations.

Oh I thought he was North Korean because he said the following

Well... I am a male Korean citizen which means I have to join the army to get trained for 2 years. Since stupid North Korea wouldn't give up on the war...Yes... It is mandatory... every Korean men have to join the army before age of 26 unless you have serious health issues.

Oh my friend (South Korean) never told me anything about going to the army. I will text him. He is 18 though and is a landed immigrant.
