Ok I feel pretty stupid posting this, but bear with me. Does anyone else feel kinda sad/weird after upgrading their iPhone?

Just got my 13 Pro yesterday, and it replaced my XS Max which I had 3 years (longest I’ve ever kept a phone). I don’t know if it’s the fact that I kept that phone the longest and was so used to it. Or maybe it was that I didn’t try iOS 15 until I got my 13 Pro, and maybe because I got a new phone and new version of iOS all at once, it was too overwhelming, but I just keep feeling like, “this is not my phone.”

It’s stupid because I transferred over straight from my XS Max, so it moved everything over the exact same. And I know this is a tool, and I’m not someone who gets emotional attachments to objects either, but idk, I feel kinda sad and weird using this new phone. It doesn’t feel like it’s really my phone or for me. I’ve upgraded my phones many times in the past before and never had this feeling. It’s not that I have buyer’s remorse either.

Please tell me I’m not the only one and that I’m not going crazy. 😅

I’m felt more weird when I upgraded to the 12 Pro last year after about 6 years of nothing but curved phones. However this year upgrading from 12 Pro to 13 Pro doesn’t feel much different. I didn’t run any iOS 15 betas through the summer either. I started using the RC the Friday before public release.

I guess I feel a little like that, where I was upgrading from an 8+ that I had used for 4 years, and a little part of me was tempted to just hang on to it and see how long I could push the 8+. It runs iOS 15, has Touch ID, the screen is still great, runs the apps I need, just that battery life is not fantastic.

Kinda like a millennium falcon type of scenario. Old, but can keep up with the competition.

I feel the same way. Tomorrow I’ll be returning my 13 Pro and going back to my iPhone X. I’m looking forward to it! The 13 Pro isn’t for me. I miss the lightweight, rounded, and comfortable iPhone X that I’ve had for 4 years now. The 13 Pro is just too bulky and brick-like. Not an enjoyable experience and I’m wondering why I even upgraded in the first place. 120hz and the cameras are cool but for me it’s not worth it.

That weird feeling could still be a bit of buyers remorse and that’s pretty common. For me personally, I don’t get attached to technology. When I get a new device I know that it will serve a purpose until something comes along that can serve that purpose better.

I think for the first part of the iPhone’s life there was a lot of innovation and rapid change - this is common in early tech products. It’s my opinion that we’ve kind of reached a plateau with smart phones - it’s a mature market now. From one year to the next there’s just not that much change to drive home customer upgrades. The result of which might be contributing to that weird feeling. Especially when you discover that the new device you wished for just doesn’t feature anything that in your opinion tops (when you factor in cost) what you’ve come to use and enjoy.

For me personally when I‘ve had that feeling with something I’ve purchased, I just box it back up and return it.

If I end up getting the 13 Pro/Max I will feel like that simply because I really don't need to upgrade my 11 Pro which is still a beast and does everything great lol + I will miss midnight green :(

I usually sell mine for around $800-$850 and get the new one for $1100, so really I’m spending about $250-$300, to me that’s worth it as I use my phone everyday, but I would understand spending $1200+ for a phone outright might make you feel like it’s not worth it as it is a big chunk of $…..also one reason you want to hold on to your current maybe because you have a lot of life memories during your ownership of the phone I would guess ? But to me personally I usually don’t get attached to my tech, it just serves a purpose till the next thing comes along.

I totally get it especially after years of using the same phone. For me, that feeling was going to the 6 plus as my first large phone after years of smaller screens and then from there to the first "all screen" model. With other years, the change is much more subtle. As I've been in upgrade programs for many years now, I do get a new phone every year but those two upgrades were the most jarring. This year, going from a 12 pro max to a 13 pro max feels like an S year but all the changes have been positive. If we do get a notchless iPhone 14 next year, it'll be another jarring one.

I imagine you'll get used to your new phone in no time. Maybe post back in this thread in a few weeks with your experience.

It’s not that I have buyer’s remorse either.
Your post details a classic case of buyers remorse. Basically the phone didn't have a wow factor that you were expecting it to have. Unfortunately, I think Apple's marketing makes consumers expect too much from their product and they seem to be consistently underdelivering nowadays.

I’ve had the same feeling back then when I upgraded from my 3GS to a 5. Although the iPhone 5 was so much more advanced in every way and really gorgeous, it wasn’t “my” iPhone. That feeling lasted quite long time.

but in the end, you get over it 😁

edit: I still have both iPhones in a drawer and must say, the 3GS is a special one for me, but that display ough

I had what might be a similar feeling last year upgrading from my 11 pro to the 12 pro. Despite the design change and predictable camera improvements I found myself realizing that for the entire year that I owned the 11 pro I wasn’t once tempted or curious about another device. Made me realize that it really was the perfect phone.
I had mixed feelings about the size no longer being offered, new devices having their own set of compromises and confusion about which model to get, and feeling compelled to upgrade because it’s what I do every year as technology progresses.

iPhone X and xs phones looked so sweet. Maybe my favorite “look” besides the jet black 7 plus.

I am enjoying this silver 13 pm I recently got though.

Hang in there buddy! You're not alone. You have the support of all us forum members. I've personally experienced similar thoughts and feelings when updating my puppy once a year and the old one moves out.
