I own an iPad Air 2 and a 12.9 iPad Pro. I try hard to make time for my 9.7 as well, but it just seems so small after using my 12.9. The 12.9 is one of my favorite apple products of all time.
I think this applies to anything you acquire that is larger in size, rather it be from a smaller car to a larger vehicle or a smaller t.v. To a larger t.v., and smart phones for that matter.
My example would the iPhone SE, it's a great phone, but I miss the size of the 4.7 iPhone which I owned originally. Which is why I look forward to upgrading to the iPhone 7 in a few weeks.
I had a 12.9 Pro and downsized to a 9.7 Pro. At first it seemed small, sort of like how the 12.9 Pro seemed big when I first held it. But what won out for me was how I can use the 9.7 Pro everywhere whereas with the larger one I left it at home for some uses.
I had the 12.9 and the 9.7. I felt bad like it was a waste of money owning both so I returned the 12.9 thinking the 9.7 would be more portable. However I miss the larger 12.9 inch screen. Even though it was large it really felt like a laptop replacement. The smaller version doesn't feel like a replacement at all. I'm just going to chuck it as just wanting what I dont have.
...i would love to purchase a new ipad mini (Pro hopefully?). I find the phone way too small and the 9.7 too in-the-middle. A mini would be perfik for vacation and business trips.
I have an Air 2 and bought a 12.9 Pro, which I intended to use for work purposes. Admittedly the 12.9 is awesome and all but it was just too big to take to and from work, so I bought a 9.7 Pro, which works perfect for what I need at work. I decided to keep both, the 12.9 at home and the 9.7 at work. I'm giving my Air 2 to my wife.

I have both sizes of iPad Pro and mix it up, using which ever one I feel like for the day or the situation. I love both sizes. Since having the 12.9" Pro though, the 9.7" feels more like my mini 2 did when I owned mini 2 & Air 2. So I find the 9.7" size much more portable since having the 12.9", just an illusion, but it works for me.
I would like to buy the 9.7" pro as well, so I can use it as a law/reference/note-book when I'm reading/ annotating/ typing on the 12.9.
But it's hard to justify the (undeniable high) cost, certainly when yearly taxes, insurance and university tuition are all due next month.
But perhaps in October/November when a new iPad Pro 9.7" is launched?!
I have an iPad 2 and the size doesn't bother me all that much after using my iPP 12.7. Now, switching back to using a Mini? That's a whole different story.
