There is a Pandora app for the new ATV. I have it installed, but frankly don't use to all that often. Honestly, I would rather put a show on in the background while I'm doing other things.

Granted, a Spotify app for the ATV would be nice. But then again, I can AirPlay music from my iOS device to the ATV too.

There's no need for streaming music apps on AppleTV: You can stream Spotify (and other services) from your iPhone/iPad via Airplay. As for fidelity, the streaming apps only offer compressed streams with sound quality "good enough" for most people listening through earbuds or headphones. For HiFi elitist music snobs like me who only listen to jazz and classical, only vinyl, SACDs or FLAC will do...

"no need for you" I am looking for the internet radio capacity with the convenience of a screen to choose my stations along with streaming video. I don't want an Iphone/Ipad, I want an ethernet connected device that is always plugged in. So now if someone wants to help out with my questions as to which streaming apps are available that would be grand.

Nope. Over a year later and music apps still aren't there.

I have a few theories:
  1. They don't consider the market big enough to devote any development time to and think just offering people airplay ability from some other device is good enough.
  2. Apple wants a cut of the subscription price and they aren't willing to do it.
  3. Or Apple is somehow otherwise putting up roadblocks.
Those are the only reasons I could think of as there has certainly been enough time. I not only miss Google Play Music and Spotify, but I also wish Google photos and Google movies were there as well. Vudu would be nice too.

Right now the box seems so crippled and lacking in what it could and should be able to do. Like so many things with Apple these days, it's rather disappointing. It doesn't even display a freaking clock somewhere on the screen without a seperate app. Despite even the most recent software update, it still seems like an unfinished work in progress rather than a product for sale.

Thank you, I missed your post, that is sad, I will either buy an android tv Xiaomi Mi Box/Fire Stick 2 or wait a few months more to see if this changes, although there probably are ways to get my TuneIn stations on other apps but it won't be the same as a dedicated app, Apple is smart in some areas but in other areas they are lost.

AirPlay is not that reliable. The trouble with what your described is it required your iPhone/iPad to receive the audio from the server, and then to send the audio to the AppleTV. This means there are two concurrent streams, essentially. There are two points of failure. If either stream glitches, it stops working. If you walk away with the iPhone in your pocket, it stops working.

I would rather have the AppleTV receive the stream directly.

Yes, it's a work around and it works.

AirPlay is reliable for me and magical.

I keep an older iPhone with my ATV4 nearby for any streaming, mostly movies.

This frees up my main iPhone.

Soon, I believe Apple will respond with an equivalent to the Amazon Echo that will address the music streaming.

Until then, no need to wait.

As soon as itunes closes you will see all the music and movie apps show up quickly. Please don't hold your breath lol.

It's business. I don't know whether apple is blocking them or they're refusing to create one in order to drive users to their device, but it isn't because they're lazy and haven't gotten around to it yet.

And I agree. I'd love to have Spotify and Amazon music. I didn't like Apple Music.
You will use Apple Music....you will not choose any other music service....that is the way
it was intended.

I have missed the Radio Stations from my ATV3 but recently got an app called Receiver that works OK.

This is one of the reasons I recommend people starting fresh go with something like Sonos, where music playing works across multiple services without the TV on. It's a much more elegant solution for music, especially now that the Spotify app supports direct connection to Sonos.
