I have constant anxiety about the safety and well being of my digital media library. I want Apple to sign something saying that we will always have access.

Long ago I stopped using iTunes for movies and tv shows. Why bother when much of it can be found elsewhere and at times straight out purchases of the discs come in at a similar price (months after initial release). The iTunes store is a nice tool if you don't mind movies that will never be presented in top 1080p or have HD audio as found on Blue Ray. If you are like me and have a decent large TV, you see the differences immediately and for some movies the HD audio is a much better than what you get through iTunes.

As for cloud services, they are great if you use them properly and should be aware that internet providers can change over time and put caps on services or reduce speed etc. So for cloud services you are at the whim of Internet providers.

I tend to rent movies via Netflix, Redbox and sometimes online provider services such as Vudu and Amazon. If I like the movie enough to see it again, I end up buying it later and often via Amazon when they have deals or "single disc" offerings. With the price of hard drives, you don't even have to have a NAS but can use DAS. I have a simple NAS that is devoted to work and media files. It has served me quite well and I enjoy to quality Blue Ray level output for both video and HD audio (through my AVR). To each their own.

I don't worry about it much. I've been buying movies and TV show seasons in iTunes since 2007. I think during that time, I have only lost one movie and it was a cheap $4.99 Poltergeist 2. It shows up in my purchases from time time but I now have an HD copy of so I really don't care.

All of my TV show seasons are still in my purchases and I have all of my most watched TV series downloaded to two computers just in case.

one weird thing i have noticed was with Battlestar Galactica complete series. It is split into 2 volumes .. I see one volume but not the second volume. When I go on the iTunes store it says I have purchased both .. it's weird

Check in your account settings if the missing episodes are "hidden". A while ago a few of my purchased TV shows were suddenly hidden without me doing it (probably a bug in iTunes). I have never really lost any content though.

I have another issue with BSG, I purchased individual seasons 1 & 2 (SD) a few years ago and now I bought the complete series package in HD. On my ipad/iphone I can see the old seasons as well as the new purchase, Apple TV however is 'smart' enough to just show the HD material. iTunes in the cloud is still pretty buggy.
