The only thing I prefer off the old non-unibodies is the MBP's keyboard. It was an absolute joy to type on compared to the newer unibodies.
Yes I also miss the keyboards from the previous generations. Getting a keyboard you like is more important on laptops because you can't change them like you do on desktops and if you keep your laptop for several years then this adds to the problem.

Back to the original topic, the looks of a computer is in the eye of the beholder. The previous generation MBP before unibodies were nice looking but I do like the look of the unibodies. As long as it's not ugly looking to me then I really don't care too much. I prefer to use my computer rather than sit there admiring it all day. ;)

If a person really feels this strongly about the looks of their computers then they should have planned ahead by buying the last generation of the model when new ones are announced and make sure to buy the highest end version so it will last you awhile...well until you ditch it for the next prettiest thing that comes out. This is like the car industry. When a redesign is announced it gives people time to decide whether they want the new one or the previous generation. Also like the car industry there is a time period after the discontinuation of the previous generation that you can get used versions, but like the old saying goes you snooze you lose.

mixed bag

as a recent mac convert (with the unibody) I actually have to say that I agree with the OP. The older MBP design was just classic and timeless. The only reason I never got one of the old ones was because it didn't come in a 13inch size (+1 for the unibody)

I wish apple had kept the bezel silver on the unibodies (I don't mind the black keys but the bezel and the glass could be improved).

This is still the best looking computer I've ever used though and way better than much of the competition:D

I didnt really like the uMBP when they came out. I mean, maybe it was just because I was jealous about it. But, as time went on I went to the Apple Store and played around. They are very nice computers. The design is pretty sweet. But, it has things that I cant stand. The black keyboard, the glass, the extra $50 for matte, USB locations, and the bezel. These are my only beefs with it. If they made the keyboard the same color as the rest of the computer I would have no problem. The computer just looks funny with a black computer and black bezel. I like the matte uMBP, but it still has the black keyboard and it costs an extra $50 which I refuse to pay.

My MBP has everything that I will need for years to come. 2 USB ports (1 on each side!!!), line in/out, firewire 400/800, and full DVI. The original MBP is still a great computer, and this will last me a while, it is a solid computer. No complaints.

I think your confusing what a computer is...its a machine that performs tasks. The fact that macs look nice is a nice bonus, but there is no hard balance. I want a computer that has the performance/technology that will perform those tasks as quickly as possible.

Then you should get a Dell.

I too prefer the Al MBP design. I can't say I miss it, though, as it's rendering some stuff over on my bed *points*

Yeah, the black bezel, black keyboard, sharp edges... all I can say is I dunno what Ives was smoking when he picked the colors. Maybe if it had a silver keyboard... oh, and WTF is going on with the lack of a mouse button? I can not STAND how the mouse has a built-in button!

I definitely like the latch on the unibodies and obviously the technology inside is superior to the previous design. However, I feel like the unibodies look like they were designed in the 90's. The lettering that reads "Macbook Pro" especially evokes the 90's IMO.

Nevertheless, I'll be getting one when I upgrade soon so maybe it'll grow on me. Perhaps there will be steampunk MBP's by then.
