Just received my 12.9 AMK this afternoon which is perfect cause I fly for 6 hours tomorrow. Owning MB Airs, Pros and Mac mini I use a good quality mouse and as fantastic the trackpad is , I’m always grabbing for my mouse instead.

Thoughts?

I don't have a trackpad but I do use a Logitech BT mouse and the Smart Keyboard Cover with my 11" ipad pro. It works pretty well. you can tell that a lot of the software hasn't been updated yet to work well with the new pointer. That is understandable. I am surprised that sometimes clicking on a link doesn't always work in Safari. particularly if the link is an interactive element. I suspect that sometimes the mouseclick event isn't fired.

Overall it is a nice addition. I suspect that, if I had a trackpad, I would use it. The mouse does not support any gestures.

For my usage, which is work at a desk as little as possible, using a mouse wouldn't work in a comfy chair or in bed, so it's full on with the MK.

Why not use the Smart Keyboard Folio instead of the Magic Keyboard then?

I have multiple MacBooks, and also prefer a mouse, despite having an apple magic trackpad. I use a Logitec M720 Triathlon Multi-device Mouse . I can configure it to connect to 3 different bluetooth enabled computers or 2 + 1 Logitec Unity USB Dongle. Using the utility provided by logic, I have set the big side button to open mission control. there are also two small side buttons which can be programmed. I now use more than my trackpad. i can also us a button to allow or disable continuous scrolling. Recommended.

The smart keyboard and magic trackpad would be a great alternative setup as you still have gestures and a bigger surface area to trigger them. It also works as a case when using the ipad as a tablet. The AMK trackpad is kinda small, I'd say it's not tall enough for comfortable gesturing. The keys are great though.

Nothing wrong with using a mouse with the AMK if you have the setup and space. Then the trackpad is there if you need it in a pinch. At least you have the floating stand and nicer keys. A mouse is ergonomically better and faster I think.
