1680x1050 would be fine with me, but I've used 1920x1200 on a 15.4" screen before (old Dell Latitude D800). Text was way too small!
why didn't you just make the text bigger? any half-decent program allows that. text size is not determined by hardware alone, but by software in sync with the hardware. has been so ever since Turing.:)

Yes, that is also what I am thinking about. If you find the text in the high-resolution is too small, you can simply increase the text size in software level. By this way you can reduce lots of useless space such as title bar and leave the space to show more useful informations.

Another notice is the font arithmetic in Mac compare with Windows, you will find a big different that every fonts looks like Bold type, by reduce the "screen point size", you will get more prefect font display effect.

I would say that if apple upgrade the 15' to have a option with 1680, definitely I will get one immediately otherwise i may looking for another options... But anyway, unibody is really a beautiful design that currently hardly to find another brand have such design.:(

I definitely agree with higher resolutions. I would like to see:

13": 1440x900
15": 1680x1050
17": 1920x1200

And BTO options for lower resolutions for those who don't want/need the higher resolutions. Maybe even 1920x1200 BTO for the 15".

As for 16:9, let's hope that means a resolution increase or at least an option for a higher resolution. Although 1920x1200 » 1920x1080 is an unavoidable drop in the high-end (until we get 2560x1440).

So that hope for next upgrade:

CPU bump to Arrandale
Graphics card change to GT2xx Series
Screen moves to:
13' 1440*800
15' 1680*1050
17' 1920*1080

:p:p

I watch a lot of media so the full 1080p makes a huge difference. Why do monitors even bother with 1050 anyways?

OK. Lets do it here. There are 3 images below. One each for 13,15 and 17. Look at the AMOUNT of information displayed on each screen. That's one of the advantages of higher screen resolution. The 17" really isn't that much bigger than the 15. I've carried one around the world since 2006. Seriously, the drop in resolution does not justify the slight size decrease.

If you think the 17"is too big, then you may as well go all the way down to 13 assuming you don't need the graphics power. Unlike the 17 to 15 drop, the 15 to 13 drop really doesn't change the amount of screen real estate too much.

I went to the store and diligently compared the all three sizes this time. While the 17" still looked much larger than the actual measurement when compared side-by-side at a distance, I somehow found it more manageable than I felt yesterday. So I've ultimately decided on the 17" :)
