I'm considering downgrading from my 10.5" iPad to an iPad Mini. The 10.5 is just a little too large for me. I had an iPad Mini 3 and loved it. It complemented my iPhone perfectly. But then again, I had a 4-inch iPhone. I don't know if an iPad Mini would feel like a waste with a large-sized iPhone. But I do know that I wish my iPhone was larger at times and my iPad was smaller.

I have a mini 5 and a 6.1 iphone 11. I wouldn't say they compliment one another from a size perspective that great. I think a 10.5 or 11 ipad is a better fit with a larger phone for home use. If I wanted to travel a lot with my ipad I think the mini would be perfect. I do find the ipad OS a bit cramped on a pad that small though too.

Well I have an iPhone 11, and an 11" iPP, but I WANT a mini 5 just because I want it. ;-p

I still haven't convinced myself to take the plunge, but I just adore the minis.

I don't know why you would think it is a waste. The iPad Mini has a screen that is 2x (or close) the iPhone 11.

I can appreciate this sentiment. I think about the Mini 5 too even though I use my 2017 iPP 12.9 at least a few hours a day. Sometimes I just wanna have an in-between device for the convenience of it. The only thing keeping me from doing it is my desire to jump ship to a Surface device to get specific workflows done that I simply can't on my iPP.

Well you have a line up I might have shortly. Thinking of adding a 11" ipad pro to the mix after returning the Air 3

There's more to it than just an ostensibly close screen diagonal. As @sracer said, due to the different screen ratio, the iPad mini has a screen pretty well twice the area of the largest iPhone (Xs/11 Max) not the ~20% larger suggested by the diagonal. The software is significantly different too, iPad Mini runs full iPad OS, with all the multitasking features, and fullscreen apps will be shown in iPad layout (usually meaning more persistent navigation elements etc). The aspect also makes it better for use in landscape mode as you get a more usable vertical resolution.

I have both the iPad Air and Mini 5, I think they both compliment each other, I take my mini with me almost all the time, it is nice to come home to the Air due to the bigger screen, but I end the night with my mini again. I have an iPhone X, so to me all 3 have their purpose.

As mentioned some posts above, the ipad mini screen is about twice as big as the largest iphone screen thanks to its closer to square aspect ratio. Makes a pretty big difference I would imagine, however I still go for the smallest possible size in flagship phones.

It definitely wouldn't be a waste to buy one.

iPhone 8 Plus, Mini 5 and iPad Pro 10.5 here. They all fill a need for me and honestly I don't believe they would overlap, however I suppose some of that would depend on what you're using them for.

iPhone X, IPad Mini 4 and IPad Pro 11 here. I use all three. I was going to replace the Mini with the Pro but decided to keep it since it was only $5 more per month to have both on my AT&T cellular plan.

could you go into more detail about your use cases? I have an 8 plus right now as well and am debating mini 5 vs 10.5 air. Really like the air for watching video but the mini 5 seems better for everything else.

I use the iPhone for the obvious. Calls, email, texting, and short videos. Sometimes even games. My aging eyes appreciate larger screen size.

I first got the 10.5 Pro and that's my go to. It has cellular connectivity so I can take that with me anywhere. Videos, gaming, reading, note taking are my primary uses.

I opted to add the mini for a few reasons. Reading on the larger iPad is fine but I've used my mother's mini a few times and the Mini just feels so good in hand and it's perfect for travel in that regard. Videos are good but the 10.5 is my preferred option for movies. It uses the same Pencil that my 10.5 does so that's more use that I can get out of it, another plus. I really didn't need it because the 10.5 does everything I need it to and the Mini is wifi only model but I sure have been enjoying it.

XS Max and iPad Mini 5. Phone is in an Otterbox Defender and wear it on my belt. I like reading and videos on the Mini not the phone.

I have iPhone 11 pro max , iPad Pro 12.9 and iPad mini 5 (Yes I have issues) my go to’s are the 11 pro max and then the 12.9 right now, the mini kinda not used as much...the wife uses that one more. I think the iPhone and mini 5 are too close in size for me so I usually go with phone if i have a choice.

I’ve got the iPad mini 5 and an X (and an iPad 11 and 12.9). The iPad mini 5 is perfect for holding and reading. When I want to do some work, I have a stand for the mini 5 that has a little shelf above it that can hold my iPhone so I can use it as a second screen. Add a keyboard and mouse and it’s a fantastic combo/setup. My iPad 11 and 12.9 don’t get used anymore. Love that Mini 5!
