I have a 2018 Mac mini and an OWC ThunderBay 6 Thunderbolt 3 enclosure (non-RAID version). When I try to put the mini to sleep, it reboots instead. This doesn't happen if the enclosure is not attached, but does so regardless of if there are zero or six drives installed. And after every reboot, I get a message saying "Your computer was restarted because of a problem". This message pops up even if I shut down the computer myself.

It seems it has something to do with the T2 chip and the Bridge OS that runs it. The error report starts with: "{"caused_by":"bridgeos","macos_version":"Mac OS X 10.14.6 (18G103)","os_version":"Bridge OS 4.6 (17P6610)","macos_system_state":"sleep","incident_id":"DD5AA8DD-A45B-4C87-A23B-A830EFB861D5","timestamp":"2020-10-09 00:30:40.00 +0000","bug_type":"210"}".

I have talked to Apple and OWC to no avail. OWC was not familiar with this issue and suggested I send it in for repair. But before I do so, since it's incredibly inconvenient, I want to hear if someone else is actually able to sleep their 2018/2020 Mac minis with a ThunderBay 4, 6 or 8 enclosure attached. My hunch is that it's a software issue and not a hardware problem.

I have a Thunderbay 4 Mini. I have no sleep issues. I have a 2018 Mini, specs in the sig, running Catalina 10.15.7.

I have "OWC ThunderBay 4 RAID Ready (JBOD) 4-Bay External Storage Enclosure" (2 x HDD and 2 x SSD) with a 2018 mini, running Catalina 10.15.7.
No sleep issues.

Thanks, great to know! However, I have the 6-bay non-RAID version, so they may not necessarily behave the same. Hopefully someone with my model will share his or her experience. But at least I now know that the 4-bay RAID and mini works with no issues! :)

UPDATE: After installing Big Sur on a test partition on a drive in the ThunderBay 6, all my issues have been resolved! The Mac mini and ThunderBay 6 enclosure now sleeps properly when running Mojave, Catalina as well as Big Sur, and I no longer get any error messages whenever I boot up saying "Your computer was restarted because of a problem (with BridgeOS and the T2 chip)”. The installation of Big Sur upgraded the Mac’s firmware, which I can tell because it brought back the start-up chime as well as new disk icons when booting with the Option key held down. So I assume it was a bug in the old firmware that Apple addressed in the new one.
