Looks like some one of the CCFL's/Some LED's in yourbacklight died.

Is the grey Apple screen fully lit when you restart?

yes fully lit for a short time. Also when the screen goes to sleep and I jostle the mouse, it is lit for a second or two and then reverts to the shade.

Ah crap you quoted me before I got a chance to fix the grammar mistake.

If its flickering on then off again its mostly likely bad light('s) or a bad inverter/power supply.

Is your iMac still under warranty? Because to fix it Apple will probably swap out the entire screen...and that's not exactly cheap (>$400). 🙁
