I fold on multiple machines, including an iBook G3 800. It gets the job done with time to spare. You may not be out of luck.

Dan

Because the G3 has a shorter pipeline and folding (not sure about seti tho) is not altevec techincally speaking it should run faster than a G4 at the same MHZ.

BTW, that machine would complete the WU easily with many days to spare.

Just joined SETI@home MR team

Fantastic - new to the world of distributed computing, I've just put my 1.42 PM in the service of SETI (very interested in astronomy, so this is a really exciting way to contribute a little bit).

Basic question:
I suppose that since the processors are constantly working, the machine never goes to sleep? Or do I have to specify that the machine is never to go to sleep? Thanks!

It's cool, man. I totally understand where you're coming from. I guess my perspective is just that we have a mandate to look for it. It's the same mandate that made us discover that earth wasn't the center of the universe and that the earth wasn't flat. It's the next step. That's why I crunch for SETI.

I totally understand why all the folding guys do it, and I'll have the server I'm currently building (god love cheap x86 hardware and linux) running a folding client. I'd like to help that cause out too. I just think that a lot of folks (not saying you) really miss the point of the whole SETI project. That's all. :)

P.S.-You're dead on about the whole Einstein point. I did pretty well in physics, and I'm well aware of what you're talking about. ;)

:) uff, at least one seti user who understands my point of view.
Just one more, little remark, i know there are people out somewhere saying that seti is just producing heat, ( meaning the cpu power that is wasted ). I personnaly think ( of course everybody should run the distributed computing they want but ) as long as the cycles are not wasted in doing nothing everything is all right.
By the way how many work units have you got? I started folding 2 month ago, and i got 101 wu s :) before i was a hard ud ( united devices ) cruncher, but well some reasons kept me off continuing at them. So now i am at folding. :)

Maradong,
I've only got 9 WUs completed. I didn't download the OS X client until I posted in this thread, ame I only run the screen saver client at I have a weak ass 450 Cube. When the new machine gets here after WWDC, though, I can guarantee that the workload will increase!

I'm really glad that I'm not the only one who uses SETI because of that whole "empirical quest for knowledge" thing. It just seems so very important to me, and our government seems to have lost interest in even the possibility of life out there. I don't know. I guess I'm just a little too much like Mulder. I want to believe. I want to know that the earth's not flat. But you understand all of that. :)

i understand you just as well. as i said everybody got his interests, and when he can help built those out why should he not work for them, but for an interest of anotherone. Well my interest is another than the yours, but i will not blame you therefore, and i hope you will do the same to me :)

Now running full-time on my ol' os9 iBook @ 500mhz (which takes about fifteen hours per WU) and part-time on my osX pb17 @ 1.33ghz (taking 6 hours per WU).

I do about one Folding-thingy a month, whilst Virtual PC handles GIMPS (Grand Internet Mersenne Prime Search) factoring on weekends.

Anyone know when the BOINC system will be implemented?
