OP I've posted a how-to and explanation on my blog so if your computer is compromised, at the very least, your sensitive data can't be touched :D

Hi Mr Cheeto, I was curious about this and I just wanted to say your blog was disgustingly helpful. I browsed for quite a bit. Thanks!

If it's a good lock (Kensington for instance) then it will be a deterrent. Problem is you can find so many cheap locks that could fit into the slot but are easy to break.

I think the lock is a good idea, you can't always just take your laptop with you or lock it in a safe when you have to run out of your room for a few minutes.

Well moved in today, there it is...... however I feel better about theft now that I have been into practically every dorm room on this floor, it seems about 40% of people have an Apple computer.

Here it is.

Just a thought: toss that MacBook Pro in a drawer if you plan on being away from it for an extended period of time. It will, at least, keep people from toying with it or moving it in the case they decide to use your desk.

it seems about 40% of people have an Apple computer.

And 99% of them are your common household tool. They only bought a Mac because somebody told them they should, not thinking for theirself if it really was a wise decision. As well, they won't take a minute to learn the system and will, instead, do as I did when magnetic-particle-testing rotor fasteners for Bell Helicopter: wing it.

I can't tell you the number of people that come to me for computer service and they apparently believe the ONLY place to store files is the desktop. I once saw a desktop so beyond repair, I couldn't catch a glimpse of the background. No joke.

With people like this, every action they perform on their computer is merely an accident, hahaha.

You've taken the initiative by joining and participating in these fora. You will be a great Jedi master in time...

[I'd like to make it known that many of the Bell V22 Osprey incidents are directly associated with vortex ring state and not mechanical failures.]

I'm surprised no ones mentioned this, but your parents homeowners insurance should cover you and your belongings from theft while living in a dorm at college. I would check into that. That, plus the lock, plus regular backups should give you some peace of mind.

Slightly off topic, but what high school did your roommate come from.

Back on topic. I have one for my laptop at work. Basically, I use it because it was free and I'm only away from my desk short times. And sometimes I don't even use it. It's more just for basic deterrent and so my coworkers won't be stupid and hide it from me...

He came from Arizona, I don't want to really put his stuff out there.

Personally, I don't worry about it. If someone steals my laptop, I'll just have my parents buy me a new one.

So...youre worried about theft, but you have 20 locks sitting around work and you're going to...steal one?

Karma is a bitch...and so is a bic pen...

the word grab was used, not steal. I would have their permission. Just like the magic mouse I have in the picture above.

If there were any such thing as karma, Hitler would have been burned at the stake, Steve Ballmer would be on welfare, and Michael Jackson would be alive today.

You and everybody else can take "karma" and shove it, unless you believe Farrah Fawcet and many other innocent people deserve cancer. Bunch of animals...

My housemates and I went through this month long phase of stealing each other laptops and posting pics of other girls we knew in strategic folders so our girlfriends would find them. Hilarity would always ensue because the girls would think the dudes were just feinging ignorance when they actually had no idea what was going on.

We also used to put porn in their presentation folders when they had to do one, and replace their powerpoint with it. That was still my favourite one. A lock isn't going to help you with the perils of university brotherhood!

they dont have like dorm insurance or something like that? and i belive that one of bestbuys warranties covers theft. which is another reason i will never buy applecare and will gladly stick the bestbuy warranty

I got 'renters insurance' while I was in school that covered literally everything (except software and CD's) and it was like $25.00, I think it was a year... I remember it being so cheap that I couldn't figure out why no one else wouldn't have it. I still was cautious of my stuff but at least if the dorm burned down (or apartment building which happened to the place I last lived in pre-graduation) you are covered.

I did see, while working at a local computer store near university, a notebook that someone had yanked the lock off the system and it had bent the metal underneath and cracked the plastic of the case. Those are a 'deterrent' as has been pointed out, not an iron clad security measure. If someone wants your computer, they will get it. I saw a 'wall safe' at a local lock shop. It's in essence a heavy welded box with a lid and cylindrical lock. Pretty cheap as I remember, and is meant to mount in a stud space in a wall. It could easily be altered to mount under a desk or dresser or bed.

Another security mechanism is having a horribly messy dorm room. If there is enough junk around and stuff hanging from odd places, any thief could end up giving up searching and walk away. It gives you the opportunity to hide in plain sight things that you don't want to take the time to hide. Like the space between the foot board and the mattress, draped with clothes and piled with books and notes... Oh, plumbing access panels can work as stash places too...

For my parents, it was optional, and cost more than me getting the policy myself (at the time). (Although we found out, too late, that I was covered under their health insurance, for free until I graduated.)

Yeah, a cheap (ON SALE) Seagate or Western Digital drive can be a lifesaver...
