I get the feeling that the Apple store will not exchange a 2nd time...

Also if they do, what are the chances of there being any different noise level?

Just a thought, are people buying the standard or wireless option 20"

Maybe a different production line...

Mine were both the wireless option.

Mine is wired.

I find it really odd that Apple are replacing machines and people are receiving iMac's back that are of the same quality. Either it's a problem with the machine in general, it's an isolated problem or it's just the sound of the machine and we're all over reacting! I'm going to call Apple tomorrow and ask what they can do.

I might call them too, I am sure the store may change again, but there is little point as at this rate it's likely to sound the same...

From the posts here and in Apple forum there a quite a few users with this issue, if they take the machine and test it they would know whether is was the correct spec or not sound level wise.

I had an online support chat with Apple yesterday, they said the 17" and 20" should should almost the same, and (when asked) said I could have a defective fan.

Disappointing news...

Having agreed that my first two iMacs were making excessive noise (and providing replacements) Apple have now told me that the noise is normal.

The level 2 engineer listened to my sound recordings and said that "having compared the noise of the sound of the hard drive and other sounds made during the recording it appears that this is a normal noise that is emitted from the imac G5." (links again below)

It would seem my patient optimism was unfounded. I shall be returning the third machine for a refund - I can't use a computer that makes an irritating noise like this, no matter how great it is in other ways. I have wasted a big chunk of time but ultimately this was not my primary computer. Other noisy iMac owners may find the ordeal more inconvenient - I feel for you.

Oh and if any UK iMac (iSight) owners would like to buy my Crucial 1 GB RAM module... (it makes a huge difference over the built-in memory)

Well I'm just about to take number 2 back....

May well just get a PowerMac, although this bumps the price up with a monitor!

So annoyed, the 20" is good value, but I cannot work with the buzzing sound.

My iMac (20" Rev. B, 2.0GHz) definitely has that sound but not as loud (well, I knew I had to turn up the volume on your recording to hear it over my own computer's buzzing ;)). It bugs me sometimes but I doubt Apple will help me out w/ it and it does seem like it is an unfortunate characteristic of this machine.

I love my iMac too much to return it... unless I was to get one of the iSight Macs. :p But then again, the sound is louder w/ that revision, huh?

wow, that noise is pretty annoying. my rev. b 20" imac doesn't sound like that whatsoever. makes me happy i have the rev, b(i also like the shape of the older g5 imacs than the new one...and i personally hate how the camera looks). besides the faster processor, i think the rest of the new machine isn't for me. the more expensive ram that's not really worth it yet is a huge turn off for me. not to mention theres even less you can upgrade now.

just about to post

Well, I was JUST about to post about this.

Just got a 20" isight imac, and for the first three days, there was NOTHING. Just a bit of air being forced out of the vents.

This morning, the whole thing starts with this buzzing, small airplane noise. I came back to it after a while, I guess it was asleep and I thought "oh, must have been some processor activity" but as soon as I hit ESC to bring it back from sleep, wwwhhiiizzzzzz bzzzzzz, the sound was back.

Now, WHY would this just happen now? After three days of some intense loading, installing, playing? I don't get it.

Bought from Amazon, don't know if apple will return or what?

Buzzzzzzzzz Is Badddddddd, Quiet Is Good.

Hi guy's I just purchased a new I Mac last week and It has a loud BUZZZZZ.
My last I Mac was much quieter. I would like to return it but don't want to take the restocking hit $$. To Bad they almost got it right. The new mouse still is not as good as the Micro$oft 4 button plus scrolling Intelimouse. Who did they hire? Wake up!!! Apple Designers. I gave the new mouse to my 16 yr. old let her suffer. I would wait untill they fix the quite annoying Buzzzz.

If it is unacceptable then it is not fit for purpose. Apple took 3 of mine back before I gave up, no charge but maybe that is UK law? 6 months later I got one of the Intel iMacs (after asking if I was likely to experience the same thing) and it's been great.

Good luck.
