Samsung's role is mostly as a manufacture of design documents and procedures created by Apple engineers. Apple owns the technology and parts; which is why these same displays are also created by the likes of LG and Sharp.

If Samsung had developed the tech themselves, I'm certain they wouldn't just be standing on the sidelines while Apple gets all the glory.

This!
And the same goes for LG and Sharp.
I'm sure LG would love to put them into one of their higher end phones if they could.
The Retina display has been around for a while now since the iPhone 4 and nobody else has been able to put it into their phones.
I think Apple developed the tech and holds some patents too but lets others manufacture it for them.

I agree with some of the earlier posters. Apple likely had liaison engineers involved at all levels of the development process, but Samsung developed the technology.
