I thought I was being cleaver by keeping food and drinks away from my MBP.

The good news is that I didn't spill soup on my MBP.

The bad news is that I spilled soup on the charger and it stopped working immediately.

I know that it is my fault, but I don't want to pay the full $79. (poor student) :(

Does Apple offer a discount for turning in the old charger?

No, but you can get open-box chargers on eBay for ~$30. I bought one and can confirm it's genuine.

Not sure why but almost all sellers on eBay sell them open-box rather than brand new. I'm assuming they just pull they from the package but who really knows.

They do!!

Atleast in Canada, they do. But the discount is minimal, like $20 I believe.

It could be different in the US though.

I was at an Apple Store a month ago for the same thing and confirm it is very minimal. Cheaper from eBay

Be careful with ebay though, there are a lot of fakes about, so research seller carefully.

Damn it.

I bought a lot of parts from eBay (logic board, display assembly, keyboard, hinge, fans, etc.), but I definitely avoid buying chargers from eBay. The safety risk outweighs any saving to be had.

I have a charger I bought from Amazon for $30 or so. Still working after 2 years.

Definitely all standard eBay warning applies by default when recommending the virtual dark back alley of the internet that is eBay.
